The House Rivers and Harbors Committee told Congress that the Florida ship canal’s economic justification is beyond question. The report, chaired by Mansfield, rejects claims it would drain underground freshwater or harm supplies, noting Major General Markham found no significant damage. Drowning of Ora E. Tate Jr. in Lake Apopka

Ora Eugene Tate Jr. of Lakeland drowned when a fishing boat capsized during a squall on Lake Apopka. Companions Dr. Floyd Martin and George S. Hoag were rescued after hours in the water. Tate, 39, was buried in Mount Dora after services. he is survived by his widow Blanche Simpson Tate, two children, and his Elberton, Georgia family. A Legion escort accompanied the casket to Wildwood and Elberton.
