Sixty Mount Dora seniors graduate in a June 1 ceremony at the Community Bowl. The Mount Dora High School Band plays Pomp and Circumstance, with Byron Nichols directing. Diplomas are presented by Principal G. E. Molnar after the Farewell by Jacqueline Bolt.
The Lake County Safety Council offers a National Safety Council Driver Improvement Course taught by Lt. Saunders of the Florida Highway Patrol. It runs 9:30 a.m. on June 5 and 6 at the Eustis Civic Center. Don Taylor invites firms to register safety directors or employees to become qualified instructors. 16 participants have already signed up.
Camp La-No-Che hosted by Central Florida Council outlined by Mr. C. D. Caldwell at Mount Dora Rotary Club. He noted world Scout Jamboree in Farragut Island Idaho and 10,000 Scouts used the camp last year. The 17 campsites host 3000 Scouts this year with $75,000 in registration fees. weekly totals around 300 boys. Also announced a mid July expedition from Central Florida Council to Colorado for a three week fishing and camping trip.
A study of possible outcomes for Orange County before during and after the Disney World project will be presented to the Orange Juice Club meeting of the Orlando Area Chamber of Commerce at 7 45 a m Friday June 2. L W Patterson president of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co Santa Ana California will share his experiences.
A limited number of the fishing guide Guide For Hire Holiday in the Hills are available at the Lake County Chamber of Commerce for pickup at the Tavares office for a nominal fee. A Speakers List has been compiled for planners in their organizations for the next year.
Mount Dora resident Richard Edgerton has accepted the role of County Campaign Chairman for the 1968 United Appeal of Lake County Drive. He brings fundraising experience from Pennsylvania and will lead the campaign with co chairmen from various towns. Edgerton is active in Kiwanis American Legion chambers of commerce and Boy Scouts and serves as National Director of the American Hotel and Motel Association.
The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce sponsors a summer recreation program starting June 12 at Mount Dora pool with 8 a.m. registration. Activities include swimming arts and crafts and sports for grades one to twelve at Roseborough Elementary Mount Dora High School and the high school gym. Schedules cover swimming lessons AAU sessions recreational swim and golf lessons with adult recreation on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The program ends July 21 1967.
Members of IceHouse are reminded of the annual business meeting on Monday June 5 at 8 p m at the Theatre building. Outgoing president Al Crone says by law changes will be discussed and reports from the past year presented while new officers are elected.
In the opening Little League game Rotary beat the American Legion 3-2. Tommy Land earned the win with 12 strikeouts and four hits allowed. David Hardman took the loss, relieved by Bobby Harris. combined nine Ks, two runs and three hits. Steve Allbritton hit the season’s first home run for the Legion.
The Florida Diabetes Association official Mrs Wilma Van Der Beek spoke at Mount Dora Lions Club Ladies Night. A Girl Scouts of Mount Dora award was presented to Mrs Sam Shaw for her Girl Scouting efforts locally and county wide by Lion President Clyde Mosteller.
Mount Dora Kiwanis Club honored the 1967 graduates at a May 25 luncheon at the Community Building. Speaker Fred Sanwald urged seniors to live by Robert E Lee's motto Duty is the sublimest word. Two $500 Kiwanis Scholarships were awarded to Alice Toy and Charles Alderman. A Lions Club Award went to Al Seabrook for the Florida Foundation Blind Fund drive. The program highlighted Camp Imokalee and diabetes outreach led by Mrs. Van Der Beek who shared slides of camp life.
Two Mount Dora divers David Potsko and Tim Bowman recovered parts of a 2% hp Champion outboard motor from Lake Gertrude. The shaft was later unearthed, confirming the find near the Dooley home. The tale links back to Maj. Kennedy and local divers sparked the Mount Dora Scuba Diving Club formation with safety and training emphasized.
