Mount Dora High Senior Awards Assembly Honors 1967 Class

The Mount Dora High School Senior Awards Assembly honored the 1967 graduating class with praise from Principal Gene Molnar. Students received multiple awards including DAR, ST AR, Babe Ruth, Kiwanis, and Beta Sigma Phi scholarships along with perfect attendance recognition and special honors for academics, leadership, and service.

Wreck Claims Life Of Navy Veteran John Boone Jr

Mount Dora resident and former Americus native John Lee Boone Jr., age 20, died in a Saturday wreck near Mt. Plymouth. A Navy veteran of two years seven months, he had lived in Mount Dora a month after moving from Augusta. He is survived by wife Sharon of Augusta, parents James Lee Boone Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Boone, two brothers James Wilson Boone and Billy T. Hooks, a sister, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Rehbaum-Harden Chapel with Rev. Eugene Watts and Rev. Paul E. Barnes officiating. interment followed at Pine Forest Cemetery.

Golf Association Sets Barbecue Meal and Clubhouse View

Mount Dora Golf Association members are notified of a barbecue on Wednesday May 31 to view the old clubhouse before demolition starts June 1 for a new building. President Buck Sadler says photographs of the new clubhouse are on display. Glenn Brown and Dr. Robert Crow lead the barbecue. Al Seabrook J G Ray and Dwight Mosteller chair the flag tournament with sign up through May 30 for rounds May 28–31.

Cain Re Appointed To Advisory Post

John Cain of Mount Dora and Howard Kurfiss of Groveland were re appointed to three year terms on the Advisory Committee of Lake Sumter Junior College by the Lake County School Board at its May meeting. Kurfiss has been a member of the committee since it was organized and serves as its chairman.

Five Honored At MDHS Senior Awards Assembly

Five members of the 1967 MDHS graduating class received top honors at the Senior Awards Assembly on May 19. Salutatorian Alice Toy and Valedictorian Jackie Bolt led the ceremony as honors were presented to Colleen Watts for the Key Scholarship, Martin Morgan presenting. Kathy Cox received the Prof Roseborough Scholarship Award and was singled out as outstanding in drama.

Fatal Accident On 441 Claims Mt Dora Woman

Mrs. Geraldine Harper Radosti, 44, of Mount Dora and Mrs. Isabel Poulos, 60, of Eustis died in a car truck collision at County Road 4767 and Highway 441. The 1960 Comet wagon failed to yield to a 1963 GMC truck owned by Tropicana Products Inc. Leroy Golden of Umatilla drove the truck. passenger Levy Hatcher of Umatilla survived. Police traced skid marks and cited FHP findings. Funeral services for Radosti were held at Page-Theus Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery Eustis.

Zambito Named Director of Advertising at Howey Academy

Howey Academy headmaster Dr C A Vaughn Jr announces Joseph P Zambito Jr will lead advertising and publicity. He will supervise the student newspaper and cover community school events while directing state and national promotion. He returns from Schenectady after a GE stint. will live in Howey-in-the-Hills with his wife Nancy Styles and their infant Catherine. Camp Challenge Opens Seventh Year In Lake County

Florida’s Easter Seal camp Camp Challenge opens its seventh season June 4 at Lake County near Mt. Plymouth. The Florida Society for Crippled Children and Adults runs the camp with five two week sessions. Fees are 80 dollars per two week session with camperships available.

Grandview Hotel to open 125-seat dining room in Mount Dora

The Grandview Hotel will unveil a 3200 square foot dining room seating about 125 guests with a TV lounge outdoor patio and private party access. The $40,000 modern addition replaces four old buildings and completes Mount Dora’s downtown beautification effort as Lt. Col. Charles Lewis plans to retire in 1968.

Collision At 5th And Grandview Injures Youth

Mount Dora High School senior Carl C. Malcolm 18 of Tangerine was injured when his uncle’s 1966 Pontiac collided with Charles Jackson’s 1959 Pontiac at the Fifth Avenue Grandview Street intersection. The Jackson car failed to stop and yield the right of way. Malcolm sustained a mild concussion, minor lacerations, and was checked by a physician. The 1959 Pontiac was a total loss. Jackson was charged with failure to obey stop sign and failure to yield. Passenger Alvin Johnson of Apopka was uninjured.

Lake County Orthodontist Addresses Rotary Club

Dr. William Dannelly spoke to the Rotary Club of Mount Dora on orthodontics detailing malocclusion causes and the value of orthodontic care. The Leesburg practitioner, the county’s first orthodontist, described baby tooth preservation and surgery for overcrowded teeth, with before and after slides.

Fire in East Town Prompts Governor Proclamation

A grass fire near East Town’s baseball park drew 19 volunteer firemen and state help. The blaze destroyed a vacant house and endangered two abandoned cars before being controlled by 8 30 p.m. Water hose and Florida Forest Service plows fought the flames as Governor Kirk issued an emergency proclamation banning fires in forests and grasslands until lifted. Over 50 Lake County law enforcement officers assisted at the meeting announcing enforcement statewide.
