Farm Security Gardens to Expand This Fall in Lake County

South African Corporal Cockerill’s lengthy World War I record
Corporal H. B. Cockerill from Cape Town is celebrated for a long service career in British forces. He joined the navy in 1895, served in the China relief, fought in the Boer War, rejoined in 1915, fought in France, endured wounds and shell shock, served as engine driver in the Royal Engineers, survived an aerial bombing, and endured later voyage rescues aboard the Galway Castle before returning to South Africa. He is 60 years old.

Charlestown Couple Buys Mount Dora Home for Year-Round Residency
Mr Jacob Kreis and his sister Miss Anna Kreis of Charlestown New Hampshire purchase the Wilbur J Beebe home on Tremain Street Mount Dora and plan to reside there year round. They previously ran a New Hampshire mountain farm that hosted summer tourists and sold it to the Government. They arrived in Mount Dora around July 21 and moved into the new residence shortly after.

Lake County Rubber Salvage Surpasses Campaign Goal
Lake County collected 534,623 pounds of scrap rubber in the campaign, enough to equip nearly 300 heavy bombers or over 500 medium bombers. The effort would supply more than 500,000 gas masks at 1.11 pounds per mask, praised by Mrs. L. C. Tally and J. T. Prater for strong local participation.

Florida Children's Commission appoints Dr. Colley chairman
Dr S C Colley of Mount Dora, a prominent Lake County physician, was named chair of the Florida Children's Commission at a meeting in Jacksonville. He succeeds A Rice K of Jacksonville who has left for military service. The commission now oversees about 150 children in hospitals and convalescence homes statewide. Colley previously lived in Tavares and now has offices there and in Mount Dora. He helped found the Lake County Medical Center at Eustis.

Filling Station Destroyed by Fire Near Orlando
The Sinclair Filling Station on Orlando road outside city limits burned last Thursday around 3 55 am. Owned by Beverly Grizzard and operated by E B and Mrs Goldman occupants barely escaped as part of the building collapsed. Inspectors deem the fire accidental possibly from faulty wiring and the building carried a small insurance policy. No rebuilding plans yet.

Seabees Navy Construction Units Open for Enlistment
Many ratings remain open for enlistment in the Seabees Navy construction battalions. Ages 17 to 50 may apply with pay from 54 to 185 dollars monthly and three letters of recommendation. Recruiters list nine Florida stations including Tampa and Jacksonville for applications and pre enlistment papers followed by an interview with engineer Theut E R Bonacci in Jacksonville next Friday, Monday and Tuesday.
