Baseball column notes Mount Dora plays Umatilla at Umatilla today. Mosteller fires a double and later scores, part of Dorans victory over Eustis last Thursday. Five years, the Dorans look sharper each game and fans are urged to keep cheering.
Mount Dora hosts Leesburg Lions in the Lake County Diamond Ball League at Heim Field at eight. The opener went 11 innings with Leesburg winning 6 5 after a 6 5 loss to Tavares last week. Tonight's game is billed as a battle for pride with other league teams strong and a planned Wednesday matchup with Orlando next week.
Lake County postpones the 1936 tax roll delinquent sale from August 2 to September 6. County Tax Collector A. Williams said the delay gives property owners more time to pay, with delinquents owing advertising costs. The delinquent list will run in the Topic through August and the first September issue.
Mr and Mrs William A Krone of Troy Ohio visited Yalaha Lake County and met real estate man W B Gibson. They viewed the LaBorde home and arranged purchase after returning to Ohio to finalize their affairs.
The Mid Pacific Eden city of Rabaul was buried as Volcano Island erupted at 4 p.m. May 29. Captain Olsen and crew of the Golden Bear evacuated 750 refugees, mostly women and children, to safety amid ashes and pumice drifting over the harbor.
State Superintendent Colin English said Governor Cone assured funding of 800 per instruction unit for public schools totaling about 11.5 million dollars. The figure represents the state's planned allocation to support instructional programs.
Fred Cone accepted the chairmanship of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce committee promoting an All Florida advertising campaign. The effort aims to raise 60 000 to 75 000 dollars through popular subscriptions for state advertising.

The Lake County Horticultural Association voted to hold four agricultural meetings across Florida to discuss a proposed marketing agreement. Meetings are Lakeland July 14 at 2 PM Fort Myers July 14 at 8 PM Fort Pierce July 15 at 2 PM and Orlando July 15 at 8 PM. Frank T. Laird of Groveland is president and H L Pringle of Leesburg is secretary.
Governor Cone sets a new real estate tax rate of three and five eighths mills for fiscal year 1937 38 an increase of one and one eighth mills from the current two and a half mills The new rate takes effect with the October levy It includes one half mill for the pension fund and increments of an eighth to three quarters of a mill for miscellaneous purposes The act authorizes an appropriation of five hundred thousand to two hundred thousand dollars this description reflects a damaged OCR text
The Kiwanis Club of Mount Dora hosted C Harold Hippler of Eustis recent gay to speak after his Indianapolis convention election as vice president of Kiwanis International He recounted convention highlights Guests included Harry Heinzman Tulsa and H W Bishop Eustis George Coffin won the attendance prize The after dinner cigars carried Dr Strickland s week old son Lex Hannum Strickland provided the refreshment box for the smokers The club plans a strong program led by Quixley as program chairman
D. H. Bishop of the Mount Dora Park Board brought a spray of blossoms and a seed pod of the Woman's Tongue tree from Donnelly Park. The letter urges the Park Board to catalog Donnelly Park’s trees and shrubs with identification plates to boost public knowledge and interest. The note recalls Mrs. Zell’s earlier plantings and praises continued care by her successor.
Rev Neslie V Underwood of Mount Dora Baptist conducts weekly meetings at Sorrento Baptist church Friday nights ahead of revival services. This week Mrs R B Mathews of Los Angeles will sing. she visits her father Judge Carl Henderson at East Crooked Lake. The Sorrento church, reorganized a year ago, grows under Rev B Hall and services begin at 7 45 PM with invites extended.
The Montverde School receives a pipe organ donated by the Congregational Church of Mount Dora. The instrument, used until recently in Mount Dora, was offered after the church installed a new Hammond electric organ. George Keller of the Mount Dora Topic suggested the donation.
The Lake County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting at Lakeside Camp Clermont Minneola from 4 to 7 on Friday September 10. An important speaker will address the gathering and reports of the year will be given followed by director and officer elections. The event features sandwiches pie ice cream and drinks with a water fete and lantern decorated boats on Lake Minneola.
Postmaster C C Dooley notes steady postal business in Mount Dora with six month 1937 receipts reaching 7429 32, up 755 58 from 1936. Mount Dora among eight Fifth District Florida towns on eligible list for new post office buildings, with site purchase and construction planned once appropriation is approved.
O. L. Judy of Moulton Alabama retired banker has bought two orange groves and a home in Clermont. He moved his family from Alabama to Lake County and they are enjoying their new property in this section.
D. H. Moore Lake County superintendent of public instruction is attending the short course for county superintendents this week at Camp Roosevelt.
The Montverde event drew the state’s largest grape show with fruit from six counties and an expanded display of home canned grape products. Florida officials, growers, and county agents led sessions on production and marketing. Prof. E L Lord was reelected president of the State Grape Growers Association for a 15th year.
Grand Master Andrew D. Agnew and party travel by special train from Milwaukee to Miami for the 40th Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment K T US A. Templar City will serve as headquarters with a royal parade and social events for visiting Sir Knights and their wives. The conclave opens July 20 with a 1 pm session and a 7 pm parade along Biscayne Boulevard, plus a Sunday service at Bayfront Park.
Florida faces a severe land crisis with ten million acres idle. Henry F. Becker from the Florida State College Geography Division warns that settlers stripped natural resources and now a readjustment is needed. He calls for reforestation but stresses the state must obtain titles to delinquent tax lands to protect and reforest the area.
DeLand leaders tout a plan to survey 250000 acres in Volusia County for possible inclusion in a Florida national forest system. If found suitable, U S Forest Service will push purchase with adequate funding. Junior Chamber of Commerce spearheaded the effort with support from regional groups.
Mr. J. G. LaDue of Mount Dora is appointed to conduct the Agricultural and Manufacturing Survey in Lake County for the Florida State Department of Agriculture. The survey seeks information on local agriculture and manufacturing and requests prompt, accurate cooperation from those approached.
