Mount Dora faces Eustis today at 3 30 with free admission for ladies. The game is expected to be competitive as Eustis sits near the top of the league. An earlier Apopka game could not be scored due to rain and official scores are not yet available.
An editor chats about summer weather and a rare ALBIZZIA or WOMAN'S TONGUE tree in central Florida. The plant, native to China and common in Cuba and Caribbean islands, blooms with seed pods that rattle in the wind, earning the nickname SICK TREE.
Mrs Helen R Bentley, widow of the late Mr and Mrs Miller Wells sister Mrs Jennie McClintic and their brother Mr Thomas Bellows, all of Chargin Falls Ohio, died within three days in early June. Mrs McClintic died June 2, Bentley June 5, and Bellows died that night. Granddaughter Mrs Walter Hackett of Lansing Michigan arrived soon after. The trio had spent months in Mount Dora making friends there.
Five Beaver Patrol members Sheila Spilky Betsy Kramer June Fenn Joann French and Jean Shipes left by car Wednesday at 9 for Camp Chowenwaw near Green Cove Springs. The two week camping program includes swimming boating hiking nature work star study handicraft and dramatics.
Drugg's Variety Store opened in its new building Saturday very auspiciously. The store building itself is one Mount Dora might be proud of with increased stock making items available locally that previously required travel out of town. The shop is well lighted and goods are attractively displayed.
Florida Telephone Corp begins a July campaign from July 10 to 24 to boost telephones across its 27 exchanges in 13 to 14 Florida counties. Officials target a higher system wide sale than last year’s 400, with a 300 quota set for this year and incentives including installation charge waivers and prize money tied to quota attainment.
The First National Bank's condition statement shows growing deposits over four years. Demand deposits rose from 159,164.93 in 1933 to 386,568.09 by June 30 1937, while time deposits climbed from 99,245.88 to 241,336.02. The period records a 142 to 143 percent gain in both demand and time deposits, indicating restored confidence and stronger finances.
Mount Dora Lodge No. 134 Knights of Pythias held its annual election last week. Officers elected include William M. Kennedy as Chancellor Commander Bert Jillet as vice Chancellor Commander Forest Prelate Kenneth Jensen as Master of Work Curtis Wise as Master of Arms Luther Greene as inner guard and Glenn Chapman as outer guard.
The First Baptist Church reorganizes its choir with J. D. Mosteller as director and Neslie Underwood as assistant director. Officers include Mrs. J. R. Latham as secretary and treasurer. Members span Sophanos, Altos, Bass, Tenor, and Pianist positions with two pianos.
The Coast and Geodetic Survey states Florida has 1 221 miles along the Atlantic coast and 2 530 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, totaling a substantial shoreline.
Lee French of Lake County writes of the National Scout Jamboree in Washington D C with Brads Collins the other Lake County participant. They enjoy Army equipment tents and meals and tour Washington monuments Capitol and Smithsonian before 26 000 Scouts gather for a memorable experience.
Kiwanis Harrold Hipler of Eustis will speak at the local club meeting and report on the Indianapolis convention. Last week Representative Thos H Cooley spoke with patriotic address. President Crane praised him as the most patriotic man in Mount Dora.
Freddie and Stella McDowell joined classmates from Mount Dora at a two month summer camp in Penland North Carolina. Their mother Mrs. Ted Estey drove them and stayed several days before returning to Florida. Other Mount Dora attendees include Anna Margaret White Betty Cooley and Marilyn Smith.
Rev. Neslie V. Underwood of First Baptist Mount Dora led a Friday night service at Sorrento Baptist Church. Attendees from Mount Dora included Mrs. Marie Thompson Joyce Thompson Claude Chapman Lester Hutchinson Virginia Chapman Florence Lotz and the Latham Heppenstal and Hall families. Special meetings are planned soon at the Sorrento church with Pastor Rev. B. Hall.
Jacksonville's municipal water front facilities offer over one million square feet of storage and nearly 300000 square feet of covered warehouse space for goods processed through the port.
Last week Dr Will Wood sold his goodwill and medical equipment to Dr S C Colley of Tavares and Mount Dora and rented his Donnelly avenue offices. Wood left for Chicago to study radiology at Cook's Hospital for six months and will return to install complete radiology equipment at Lake County Medical Center while keeping his Mount Dora residence.
Mr and Mrs F E Payne of Orlando board the 32 foot Mary Lucy at St George wharf Lake Carlton for a ten day cruise to Yankeetown on the Gulf of Mexico. They plan stops at Lakes Carlton Beauclaire Dora Dora Canal Lake Usti Haines Creek Lake Griffin Ocklawaha and the St Johns to Jacksonville then return via Caloosahatchee River Canal to Yankee town. They will keep the boat for fishing and pleasure trips.

Dr J E Wilkinson of Ottumwa Iowa died Monday night June 28 at his home after a long career as a physician in Missouri and Iowa He was born June 6 1837 in West Lebanon Pennsylvania and practiced in Hannibal and Macon before moving to Ottumwa in 1875 He celebrated his 100th birthday with family and a quiet gathering and is survived by a daughter Mrs Wardell and a niece Mrs Naomi Slocum Funeral services were held at his home with Rev L H Matheus officiating Burial was in Macon Missouri
Victor Lent of Lake Lucy near Sorrento brings specimens and photos of the white sapota Casimiroa edulis. The fruit resembles an apple in size and shape, measures about 3 inches across and over 2 inches thick, turns yellow when ripe, and contains several large seeds. The tree is hardy, tolerating cold near an orange tree, with only two other known trees in the area and fruit smaller elsewhere.
