Community Hall service charges spark town debate
A local council faces bills for fuel and staff at the Community Hall. Critics argue users should bear the costs, while others see charges aimed at outsiders and tourists. The plan includes a $1.50 base rent, an $8 heat fee, and a 35 percent box receipt surcharge, with adjustments pending as the committee refines the schedule.

Harvest pageant traces reaper evolution from sickles to tractors
The Ames Iowa pageant during an American Society of Agricultural Engineers meeting shows the harvest story from Bible times to modern methods. Four men with sickles lead, then scythe swingers, cradlers, and the McCormick reaper followed by horse drawn reapers and binders. A team of 22 mules powers a harvester thresher cutting a 16 foot swath, then tractor combines that can harvest 50 bushels per hour, equaling twelve cradlers, twelve hand binders and forty eight flailers.
