Mount Dora to Host Two Day Junior Olympic Swim Meet

About 600 swimmers from 15 AAU clubs statewide will compete at the Mount Dora Pool Friday and Saturday July 7 and 8 beginning at 6 am. Mount Dora Swim Club hosts teams including Beckner, El Fin, Eustis, Merritt Island, Leesburg, Platinum Coast, Ocala, Port St. Lucie, Umatilla, South Brevard YMCA and others plus unattached competitors. Meet chairman Doug Heard and officials including Wendall Husebo announcer and Jimmy Zeng starter will oversee events with medals awarded after each race. Concessions run by Fred Sanwald expect over a thousand served on day one.

Mount Dora man held on murder charge after inn shooting

Elton Lee Nix of Mount Dora was killed during a June 28 argument at the Orange Blossom Inn on Grandview Street. James Otis Jones, 21, also of Mount Dora, is held in Lake County Jail on murder charges after road blocks and a Leesburg arrest. Special Investigator H L Woodrum led the inquiry.

Bobby Harris led the American Legion in Mount Dora Little League with 14 strikeouts as his team beat the Lions 5 to 3. Wayne Molnar took the loss after 10 strikeouts. Harris also hit a home run for the losers. Kiwanis and Rotary split 7-6 games with Bill Fowler winning one and Kiwanis winning another in the 6th.

Leesburg Association Denies Dividends Declared

First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Leesburg announced dividends totaling over 292 865 for the quarter ended June 30 1967 led by president Frank L. Cogburn. Six month dividends reach 625 188 and cumulative payouts exceed 9 148 000. School savings program participants earned 1 794 in dividends in the first half.

In Mount Dora on July 4, the Lions beat Kiwanis 7 to 2 with Doug Couch winning on the mound while Kiwanis pitcher Johnny Bales took the loss. The Legion edged Rotary 2 to 1 as two late runs sealed the win with 13 strikeouts by Bobby Harris and 14 by Tom Windram. A chicken dinner followed at Gilbert Park. In the Vietnam casualty note, Marine Lance Corporal Gary Duvall, 19, born June 22, 1948 in Lancaster, PA, is honored with family details and funeral arrangements pending.

Fred Andrews Named Proxy of State Drs

Dr. Frederick C. Andrews of Mount Dora became the 19th president of the Florida Academy of General Practice at the 18th Annual Scientific Session in Miami Beach on July 13. He succeeds Dr. Louis C. Murray of Orlando as spokesman for over 650 members and was joined by immediate past president Dr. J. B. Hall. The three day meeting combined business with scientific sessions to provide postgraduate education for FAGP members pursuing AAGP eligibility. The organization requires a minimum amount of certified postgraduate education for continued membership.
