Emma Likowski Pioneer Resident Dies at 84
Emma Likowski 84, a Mount Dora resident since 1882, died January 20 after a long illness. Born February 3, 1854 in Columbus Minnesota to Polish parents, she was a longtime Sunday School teacher librarian and church worker at the local Methodist church. She leaves a son Joe in Mount Dora and a son in Weleetka Oklahoma. Funeral services were held Sunday at Rehbaum Funeral Home with Dr Heber D Ketcham officiating and burial in Forest Cemetery. Yacht Club Motor and Sail Races Off Sunday Afternoon
Four motor boats and six sailing yachts lined up at 3:00 p m on Sunday for a brisk yacht club race under Commodore Ed Gertson. Ohio led the pack with Jinx close behind followed by the Comet and Moth as Poise started later on handicap. Ohio finished first at 3:58 30 with Poise second at 3:59 03, Jinx third at 4:03 15, and Comet fourth at 4:04 00 in a 48 minute 30 second winner’s time. The Moth trailed but delivered an impressive run in light to moderate wind across a five mile course.

Ted Shawn and His All-Male Dancers to Tour Mount Dora
Ted Shawn and eight male dancers, sponsored by the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce, tour Mount Dora next Tuesday. The company, praised in press from the U.S. and England, toured coast to coast and Canada and gained fame in London during King George V’s Jubilee. Shawn, born October 21, 1891 in Kansas City, started Denishawn with Ruth St. Denis and helped shape American dance. The all men group formed in Boston in 1933, with members from across the United States, and spends summers at Jacob’s Pillow in the Berkshire Hills performing strenuous studio work and farming duties.

Brooks Home Damaged by Fire on McDonald Street
A fire on Tuesday evening at 938 McDonald Street damaged the Brooks residence likely sparked by a chimney ember on dry cedar shingles. Volunteer firefighters responded quickly saving the structure with about 200 dollars in damage, insured, while contents were lightly affected by water. The home was owned by J. F. Foster Jr. of Charleston and occupied by Mr and Mrs C E Brooks.
