Mathews Files Candidacy for Florida Governor Race

State Sen. John E. Mathews Jr. of Jacksonville became the first candidate to qualify for the Florida governor contest at the Secretary of State's office. He vowed a uniform statewide program, rejected town by town promises, and pledged leadership for a plan benefiting all Florida. Mathews, named Most Outstanding Member of both Senate and House in past sessions by press editors, urged voters to “compare the records” as he prepares a 22 point program.

Mount Dora Shuffleboard Club Hosts 21 Teams

The Mount Dora Shuffleboard Club hosted 21 teams from Tavares on Monday February 17 with Mount Dora winning 37 games to 26. High and second high playoffs followed with Mount Dora teams victorious in both contests.

National Open doubles held in Lakeland and other events

The Fourth Semi-Annual National Open doubles took place in Lakeland on Feb 27 28 29 with related Robbins doubles at Clermont Feb 18 19 postponed finals. Norther District doubles ran Feb 20 21 in Sanford where Mount Dora Lyle Wood Joe Smith won main event and Wood Smith took consolation. Regular club card party featured pinochle five tables won by Estelle Hall and Emma Olson. one bridge table with Mary Klein and Vivien Derby consolation.
