Mount Dora eased past Eustis in its December cigarette tax allotment per Richard B. Keating of the State Beverage Department. December net collections were 5,269,385.80 with Mount Dora at 7,108.15 and Eustis at 7,085.10. Leesburg led the county at 15,661.23, followed by Clermont at 3,150.89.

R. O. Dude Grantham city superintendent of streets was named city civil defense director at a Civil Defense Council meeting. Fires Raze Homes in Mount Dora Area This Week

Fire officials reported a string of blazes in Mount Dora last week. E L Smith residence at Robie Avenue and Rossiter Street burned completely. A vacant North Bay Road site, a Tuesday bed blaze at an upstairs unit, and a Christian Home trash fire were investigated along with a Tuesday grass fire sparked by an electrical cord.

Shipley New CofC President Hearts Downtown Center Ties

Lewis E. Shipley owner of the Hi Lander Motel named CofC president as the new Chamber board met at City Hall. H D Warren and Tom Champion were installed as first and second vice presidents with Elizabeth Siess reappointed secretary. The gathering aired feelings between downtown merchants and Golden Triangle merchants and discussed plans for a treasure hunt and a local stamp program. A bid to officially designate Alternate U S 441 was discussed, with a joint resolution to be prepared for the County Board. Total paid memberships reached 4445 in the drive. The group also planned the April regatta and fishing tournament with Lake Side Inn offering support.

Florida House Views Green Swamp by Copter and Boat

Florida House Select Committee on Water Resources toured the Green Swamp area starting at Clermont. They saw maps and heard about a potential drought risk in the Oklawaha River Basin and discussed a possible 100 million dollar control and conservation plan funded in part by the state. Representative Welborn Daniel hosted.

Public Utilities Commission chairman Ed Mason reports informal talks with Greyhound stalled. The company has been ordered to show cause why bus service should not be provided, with a response due by March 3.

City council approves new car for streets supervisor

City Council Tuesday night approved buying a four door compact station wagon for the city superintendent of streets R O Dude Grantham. Councilman Warren Morgan proposed transferring Grantham’s pickup to the use and purchasing a new vehicle. A $2000 budget item was cited for the purchase. Texaco won the city gasoline contract at 13.75 cents per gallon exclusive of taxes. Gulf 13.76, Humble 13.04 but fluctuating price led to rejection, Standard 13.83 after Florida tax adjustment. Champion noted need for better library air conditioning and a unit from temporary City Hall was approved. Mayor Willmott’s request for a court clock at City Hall was approved. $15,000 transfer from utility to general fund to be discussed with Fred Wise.
