Lions Club Monthly Meeting At Hotel Mont Dora

The Lions held a full attendance meeting at Hotel Mont Dora. Lion Downs was appointed treasurer by President Bowis as Lion Cecil Parker serves in the military. The Eyesight Conservation committee bought glasses and aided a school girl’s eye exam. Lion Devorsak is welcomed back to the club. Next meeting at the same venue on the last Monday in March.

Community Club highlights arts leaders and upcoming Morrison recital

Mount Dora figures share forty years of arts leadership including F A Whiting’s tenure at major museums. Donald Scott Morrison, famed pianist, performs March 2 at Community Auditorium 8 PM with free admission, hosted by the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce.

Aircraft Warning Film Shown For Observers And Public

An AWS film titled Air Defense and Interception will be shown Wednesday night March 3 at 8 in the Community Building. The film demonstrates the filter board receiving calls from observation posts and the main Army Operations office and depicts air raid response from call receipt to interceptor takeoff. Army officers say an observation post with two observers per shift equals 16 planes on patrol.

Local official joins WAAC amid Tampa induction ceremony

The Ra tioning Board chief clerk was sworn into the Women’s Auxiliary Corps last Thursday in Tampa along with ten other enlistees. Lieut. Dorothy L. Wood conducted the ceremony as Miss Beeland receives a brief furlough before reporting to a training center. The Topic plans a future photo in uniform.

Seniors of Mount Dora High present Suspense mystery drama

The Mount Dora High School seniors stage Suspense a three act mystery drama by Glenn Hughes at the Community Building. The cast features Sara Roseborough Dan Layne Nancy Hollingsworth Edward Klatte Norman Tuckett and Gloria Watts among others with Mary Estey Lena Harding and William Barker in supporting roles. Curtain rises next Friday night with strong ticket sales.

Glenn Chapman received a letter inviting induction at Camp Blanding next Tuesday. Major Thomas H. Cooley moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and finds it cold there. Clyde E. Wallace, now at Camp Blanding, is classed as chief petty officer in the Naval Reserves. Dedrick Green studies Air Corps Administration at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge after transfer from Keesler Field. Charles Norris’s relatives are informed he is a prisoner of war in the Philippines, with reports of his being missing but alive. Corp. John Hicks Snell returns home on a 15 day furlough from Yuma Air Base and plans to resume duty. Roy Beasley writes from Guadalcanal that conditions are hard but not as bad as stories suggest, with guard duty and wet, muddy days. a nearby stream offers a cool bath. The letter was written February seventh. Lieut. Leon B. Cheek Jr. is stationed at Camp Van Dorn, Miss., and asks for his Topix to be mailed. he enjoyed Mount Dora visits and regrets missing a Chamber of Commerce dinner.

Central Florida Conference Basketball Tournament Opens Next Week

The Central Florida Conference Tournament runs March 4 5 at Mount Dora with seven boys teams and a Lake County girls event. Umatilla and Mount Dora are top seeds. New Blackout Air Raid Signals Begin February 17 1943

Beginning February 17 1943 a city blackout plan goes into force with Blue Flash for a two minute dim-out siren. Pedestrians and traffic may move at slow speeds while lights are out. Civilian Defense workers post and flash alarms signal dispatch and return to normal with White All Clear after Blue or Dim-Out signals.

Emergency Need for Surgical Dressings at Mount Dora

Mount Dora Branch receives extra surgical dressings from Lake County Chapter. The dressings room operates all day Tuesday to Friday and Tuesday evenings 7 to 9 for daytime workers. October and November quotas to be met by March 15 and much of December by March 31. Volunteers urged to contribute time and work, with gauze sponges already in hand.

Tourist Gasoline Rule Outlined

Winter visitors who drove to Florida are ineligible for gasoline ration applications to return home. Only two classes qualify: residents of the 17 Eastern States away since Aug 22, 1942, and non Eastern State residents away since Dec 1, 1942. All should appear before the board when returning home to clarify status.

Mrs Hubbard and Mrs Zell received letters bearing the four freedoms cachet likely the first prints in Mount Dora. The letters carried three new one cent stamps and reiterate the design name of the four freedoms freedom of speech and religion and freedom from want and fear with a motto about extending peace after the war.

The 1943 M D H S basketball schedule lists events from February 28 to March 2 featuring the Sr class play, Winter Garden showings, and all games starting at 7:30. Admission prices are 4 to 55 cents for elementary, 15 cents for high school, and 25 cents for adults including federal tax.
