The Lions Club will meet Monday night February 22 at 7 30 pm at the Mount Dora Hotel. With many members in the Armed Services the club shifts to the last Monday night meeting until further notice and urges all Lions and visiting Lions to attend.
The town organizes a Wednesday scrap drive to collect iron and metal pieces from residents. Lighter items should be curbside for pickup, heavier pieces will be carried by workers. Leave word at city hall or with salvage chair H T Fenn to list gathered sites.
The 1943 March of Dimes campaign runs nationwide from today to February 24 to aid infantile paralysis victims. The Princess Theatre hosts collections in its lobby with volunteers Anna Margaret White Nancy Hollingsworth Lucille Minkley Betty Cooper Sara Roseborough Gladys Irene Crane Doris Harding and Betty Cooley. Half of funds go to the local Infantile Paralysis Committee chaired by Prof. D. D. Roseborough, plus a theatre donation.
Dr James Austin Richards visiting daughter in Baton Rouge will be home Friday and preach Sunday morning on Home Building at the Community Church. He spoke at LSU University Church and at the Student Center during his Baton Rouge visit. Mrs Richards plans to stay a week longer with their daughter.
In order to obtain Homestead Exemption, applications must be filed with the Town Assessor on or before April 1 each year. Blank forms are available at the Town Clerk's office or the office of L. A. Tremain, Tax Assessor, 411 Donnelly Avenue.
The Lakeside Inn hosted a Friday putting contest and tea with prizes war stamps won by Mrs. S R Matlac and Dr. L H Rice. A Lincoln's Birthday concert sponsored by Prof. Cauley Lott featured Natalie Clemons and a notable quartet. Guests arriving include Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Tyler Riverton NJ and Colonel De Wayne and party NYC, along with returning friends from New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Former Georgia congressman and 1932 Dry candidate William D Upshaw will address the 11 o clock service at First Baptist Church about Who Shall Rule the World God and the Right of Hitler and the Devil He is known as The Billy Sunday of Congress and draws students and soldiers with a promise of a dollar bill to the man who goes to sleep He also speaks at the high school Thursday at 2 30 on Pluck Purpose and Patriotism.
Four generations of the Caudel family share a home in Mount Dora at the Har old Larsen residence on Limit Street. Mrs. T. L. Caudel, her son Shelby Caudel, his daughter Mrs. Harold Larsen, and the Larsen children Tiny Anne and Barbara Jean live together, after previously residing in Frenchburg Kentucky for five years.
Rationing guidance advises households to count canned and bottled foods on a table and set aside nonrationed items. Cans under 38 ounces and baby foods are excluded, while ketchup and chili sauce stay on the table. the final count should be given on honor.
A wartime point ration Q and A covers whether to count bought cans only, how to record totals, and how ration values are issued. It explains that sizes need not be listed, that dried fruits are not counted, and that point values are uniform across stores with monthly allocations based on family size.
Mount Dora High School schedules home basketball events at Earl B. Ferson Gymnasium. On Friday at 7 30 p m the Hurricanes face Leesburg Fliers in boys action and Mount Dora girls play Orange White. Next Tuesday February 23 both girls and boys teams host Wildwood at 7 30 p m.
The A. J. Waltz property at Woodland and Tremain streets, a half block, was sold by George W. Malone to Frank Taylor of Hudson Massachusetts. Taylor is an elastic webbing, shoe lace and braid maker who has converted his factory to war production for the Army Navy and Air Service and will manufacture parachute shrouds and braided fabrics. He plans to spend winters in Mount Dora.
Kiwanis today hosts Professor Royal W. France head of Rol lins College economics to discuss George Washington. Last week Dr Cris Foye spoke on Abraham Lincoln to Kiwanians, Boy Scouts and guests. Twenty one Mount Dora Troop 19 Scouts attended the luncheon.
Poppy Day arrives with red paper flowers worn in memory of veterans from World War I and II. Local veterans in government hospitals craft the flowers and portions of sale proceeds fund Auxiliary welfare and rehabilitation for disabled veterans. Mount Dora observes the sale on Saturday February 20th.
The Government asks for typewriters from all ships and units through the American Legion. Machines should be non portable, not older than 1935, standard make, and sold at a fair price based on age and condition. Contact Richard Eddy or Adjutant Ben Carr of Mount Dora Post No 35 to arrange sale.
A new log book will replace record sheets at the observation post to document on watch and off watch times, direction changes, and aircraft identifications. The Army Flash report will drop the word Motor and planes will be classified as Single Bi or Multi.
B Company briefs praise accurate shooting and steady score improvement under Lt Scott or Kimball with Pvt Irving M Short leading instruction. The weekly drills include stance, hold, and trigger squeeze corrections, snack breaks, and growing interest from new members as Major Wiley observes progress. Former Captain Rollin Javens’ gift funds drills on the high school athletic field.
Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce launches its 1943 drive with two teams targeting 150 memberships. Leaders Richard Edgerton Alfred Rehbaum Sr and a full canvass planned across Mount Dora to boost civic work and tourism, with officers George White president and a 1943 board of directors named.
Tickets go on sale for Suspense a three act mystery comedy by Glenn Hughes staged by Mount Dora High School seniors at the Community Building Friday February 26. Stan McBride a Sherlock Homes radio star stars in a plot where a valuable cigarette case attracts five pursuers ending with a twist during a live broadcast.
The Red Cross surgical dressings room will be open Tuesday Thursday and Friday each week until further notice. A new quota has been received and work will start on it as soon as the present quota is finished. Volunteers will be welcome and washable dress and a head covering are required.
Sixty white men from Lake County were inducted into the Army Thursday of last week. From Mount Dora were Herbert John Merch Jerald William Drawdy William McKinney, from Sobrento William Lewis Driggers James Von Herbulin, from Lake Jem James Brouton Jackson.
Mount Dora boys and girls basketball teams are scheduled to play here tomorrow night and again Tuesday night, continuing the season schedule with back to back home games.
The infantile paralysis drive is progressing nicely under Prof. D. D. Roseborough and will be completed this week. No house-to-house canvass is planned, but contributions are welcome at the Chamber of Commerce, the First National Bank, or with Mr. Roseborough to aid victims and stamp out the disease.
Mrs. H. H. Mallory thanks Carl Graves and Dr. N. S. Mayo for noble efforts in extinguishing a grass fire on her property Tuesday morning, preventing a call to the fire department.
The Band Boosters Club holds its regular meeting on Thursday February 25 at 8 p m in the school auditorium. Members are urged to attend.
The schedule lists games on Feb 23 against Ocoee and Feb 28 with Sr Class Play Suspense and March 2 against Winter Garden all at 7:30 PM. Admission is 10c for grades 4-6 15c for grades 7-12 and 25c for adults tax included.
