An enormous checkerboard designed for park use features six inch diameter checkers with thick kings. Moves use a bamboo cue with a hook and ringed pieces for jumping, while non jumping moves push the piece like shuffleboard. Built by Builders Supply Company, the board folds for storage and weather protection, credited to Mrs. Zell.
Ameen Rihani spoke at the Community Forum about Arab rulers and modernization in Arabia. He described a multi king system, British treaties, and the shift from nomadic life to automobiles, stressing civilization and pace. Next week Dr. Royal Meeker will discuss unemployment problems. Congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America.

Mrs. Ethelyn P. Zell, chairwoman of the park commission, urges citizens and visitors to donate small sums to fund beautification work for the city park. The appeal promises 100 percent dividends in potential value as the park grows, with donations welcome to be handed to Zell or mailed to the Topic office, starting with a dollar.
The Rollins College Players presented two one act plays The Chased Lady and Neighbors to a large appreciative audience on Friday at the Tourist Club in the Auditorium. The club announced plans for February 20 a pageant Indian Life The Spirit of Wekiwa with singers actors and choral club in costume. Membership totals reached five hundred seventy four with promise of further programs and activities.
Cliff White and Miss Florence Hibbard were returning from Daytona Beach when a head-on collision with W M Osteen of Lake Helen damaged both cars. White summoned help from Mount Dora and deputies were alerted as the two occupants escaped serious harm.
Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce reports a record drive closing last Wednesday with 161 memberships secured and more arriving daily. Dinner honors J J West team and A J Waltz team for top effort. directors and officials attended. The member roster lists many local firms and individuals up to February 10th.
Florida radio stations join the Florida Citrus Growers Clearing House to push oranges and grapefruit to northern buyers. A schedule of thirty minute programs runs across WDAE WDBO WFLA WJAX WSUN WQAM and WRUF with Suwannee River as the theme to lure northern consumers.
The Grand Leader department store in Mount Dora kicks off a thrift sale starting next Saturday February 14 aimed at thrifty residents of Mount Dora.
At the Grand View Hotel the Kiwanis Club heard pianist Burton Bender perform a program aided by local vocalists. Bender played selections and a self recorded piece on a victrola. Jeanette Pike, Dean Pinkston and Louise Lane sang several numbers. A. M. Pratt of the Florida Citrus Growers Clearing House Association will speak next.
The Mount Dora schools awarded prizes in the First National Bank essay contest. Robert McMurray won first prize for 11th grade with $10 in gold. Marie Slack took second, Vivian Thompson third, Cecelia Palmer fourth, and Peggy Champ fifth with savings accounts. James Simpson spoke as bank president and prizes were handed by Geo White.
Saturday February 14 is the final day to submit relief applications for losses from the eradication campaign. Local residents affected should visit Sam Sadler and Jack Simpson at their Fifth Avenue office before the deadline.

A 1931 Florida letter from A J Burrows to the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce announcesthat New Smyrna and Coronado Beach have free bridges as of January 29 and expresses hope they will remain free.
The Mount Dora Yacht Club earns praise for season upgrades to the clubhouse and grounds. A steam heating plant funded by Commodore Elect Elmer Johnson and others elevates comfort, while billiard facilities receive new cloths and cushions. A new boat house by C. A. Bennett, Kansas City, Mo., adds a luxury hub for two Chris Crafts and a large pier, with a second floor lounge and east west verandas reflecting plans to boost Inland Waterways and yachting circles.

Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club sent two teams to DeLand on Thursday afternoon February 5 for friendly matches. The Mount Dora men won by a narrow margin as crowds watched home teams.
The Annual American Legion Auction to aid disabled ex service men and families will be at the auditorium Saturday night starting at 8 00. Admission is free with hundreds of articles for sale and bids invited. Funds support destitute ex service men and their families and past auctions have accomplished much good.
