Forest Service Tips for Safe Christmas Tree Care and Harvest

The Forest Service advises using plain water in a stand with no chemicals to reduce fire risk and monitor needle color. Get a freshly cut tree, keep the butt in water with a slanted cut, brace the stand, and maintain water above the cut surface. Annual harvest reaches 15 to 18 million trees supplying over half of U S homes, with spruce and fir species dominating and Canada contributing millions. National Forest cuts amount to about a quarter of a million trees yearly, often thinning to promote timber development and some trees come from dedicated Christmas tree farms.
