Town Council Adopts 1946 Budget At Special Meeting

At a special Town Council session on August 13 with five members present, a budget for the year starting November 1, 1946, was approved. Absent were Cleary Turner and Mayor Fortner, all believed out of town. The total millage was set at 16.0 with 7 mills for debt service and 9 for operating expenses, a small increase over prior levels. The notice references total real estate and personal property assessments.

The Reverend George Gibson returns to Mount Dora to lead the 11 o'clock Sunday morning service at First Methodist Church after summer study at Union Theological Seminary New York. Harold A Hayward 62 a Mount Dora resident was found in Lake Dora near the Yacht Telab docks after a fishing trip. Investigators believe a deep scalp wound from an axe or hammer caused death, with initial murder theories questioned by Miss Mary Emma Jones who owned the apartment basement guest house. The case remains under local police review as details unfold.

Col Stoyte O. Ross Receives Legion of Merit

Col. Stoyte O. Ross of Jacksonville received the Legion of Merit from Maj. Gen. E. L. Eubank at Fort McKinley Luzon Philippines. The award cited his achievements as director of training and commander at Lake Charles Army Air Field Louisiana and Aloe Army Air Field Victoria Texas.
