Russell Harris Receives Army Commendation Ribbon

Master Sergeant Russell I. Harris, son of Mrs. Clarence Cooper of Mount Dora, earned the Army Commendation Ribbon for radar maintenance duty in the Harbor Defense of Cristobal, Fort Sherman, Canal Zone. The award was presented by Brig. General F P Hardway at Fort Sherman. Harris arrived in Panama in March after enlisting in November 1939 and currently serves in Headquarters Battery. His mother and stepfather live in Mount Dora.

Five new Lions inducted at Leesburg Lions Club meeting

At the Leesburg Lions Club gathering, five new members Bill Williamson, Bill Stewart, Claude Fralick, M. R. Wagner, and Timothy Crook were blindfolded and seated to illustrate eyesight conservation. Mount Dora Veterans Form Council and Fish Fry Date Corrected

A Mount Dora Veterans Council was formed at a joint meeting of local veterans groups with Tommy Hurlburt as chairman and Parker as secretary. A flag raising rally at the ball park preceded a Mount Dora Lions Club sponsored event. A local boy will attend Boys State later this month. The Legion fish fry date was corrected to August 19 at Gilbert Park 6 p m.

Veterans Service Officer to Be Here August 16th

Ted Lancaster assistant service officer will be at the Post Office Friday August 16 at 2 30 p m to assist all veterans or dependents with any claim or benefit related to military service including widows and children. The service covers compensation or benefits under the GI Bill or other entitlement laws and aims to help file claims.

Rare Moon Cereus Blooms Draw Sleight’s Notable Display

Sylvan Shores resident C Sleight showcased a rare Moon Cereus with 22 large white blossoms. The plant blooms once yearly, producing numerous delicate blooms on a climbing cactus like stalk with leaves extending over a foot. It drew praise from local flower enthusiasts.

Educators Arrive for Lake County Workshop at Grand View Hotel

Grand View Hotel hosts a group of educators led by Dr. F B Culpepper of Florida State College for Women and several Florida officials including Miss Vera Dumas and Miss Sara Krentzman from the State Department of Education. The visitors travel from Tallahassee Miami St. Petersburg Gainesville and Pensacola for a three week Lake County teaching workshop. Florence Lee has completed her studies at the University of North Carolina and will receive her diploma this month. She earned a BS degree in Pharmacy and plans to work at Mount Dora Pharmacy as an assistant to her father. In January 1947 she will take the State Board Examination for pharmacists.
