Blackout Tuesday Night Real Success

The nine county blackout Tuesday night was the most successful test to date with a 35 minute blackout and alert status for about 70 minutes. Mount Dora wardens patrolled districts, sirens heard clearly, and residents cooperated by darkening homes and staying off streets. Chief Air Raid Warden O M Simpson thanks the public and praises Acting Chief George White and assistants Gordon Conboy and Louise Walden.

George Treadwell breaks leg in yard swing accident

George Treadwell twelve year old son of Mr and Mrs John Treadwell of Ninth avenue is laid up with a broken leg. The injury happened Tuesday evening when the swing rope broke and threw him to the ground. He was taken to Lake County hospital where the broken leg was set in a cast between knee and ankle. The family remained in the X ray room until the all clear. George is a School Band member and had a birthday honor at a recent band concert.

Lawn Bowling Club in Mount Dora greeted Mr. and Mrs. Carroll D. Smith of Toledo on April 4 and 5. Several former members were noted as missed this season with winters spent in Florida and Arizona. An April 1 19 end game produced a 15 to 9 score, and on April 2 the Yankees beat the second challenging team 15 to 12.

Ernest Pechin to Appear as Guest at School Band Concert

Famous cornetist Ernest Pechin will be guest artist at the School Band concert Friday April 17 in the Community Building. Kiwanis club hears Ralph Boswell editor of Citrus Grower Magazine speak at the meeting. Dr Otis Foye delivered a strong sermon and Easter music included Buddy White cornet solos and Del phia Norman Easter songs with Mrs C M Brown on piano. George White performed two solos as George Junior to reassure members. Lee French’s team won the attendance contest with 710 points and Clark Dillenbeck was close with 690. Federal government takes Leesburg Leesburg airport lease

The federal government leased the Leesburg airport for six months through June 30 with a renewal option. The $500000 field between Leesburg and Tavares will be used by the army or navy once completed. Paving and lighting work by Armis ton Construction, cost about 200000 plus site clearing at an estimated 30000. Hangars and facilities may total 1 to 1.5 million if built.

Lake Countians Study Civilian Defense Work

Twenty five defense leaders in Lake County attended a November 4 training course at Tavares to supplement prior instruction in Orlando. Led by W. J. Barker and G. A. Sauer the program covered organization of defense councils, control center operation, incendiary bomb handling, and gas protection.
