Editorials Call for tougher penalties on crime
The Florida Sheriff's Association pushes mandatory sentences for major crimes including armed robbery. State Senator Jim Glisson vows a ballot proposal if the 1975 session blocks his plan a three year minimum for felonies involving firearms before parole eligibility. He cites rising assaults with firearms, armed robberies, and store holdups as proof of the need for action. The piece questions whether harsher penalties are the best deterrent and proposes tighter handgun controls as an alternative to reduce violent crime.
