New Oil Firm Buys Property In Mount Airy
The Home Oil and Gas Company, formed in Mount Airy, buys the Forster Coalson farm along Highway h2 opposite Greenhill School. The plan includes four 15,000 gallon tanks for gas fuel oil and kerosene and a new 40 by 90 foot building for offices and stock. A filling station and truck stop will follow and the firm leases Paul Calloway Service Station on Main Street to convert to Phillip 66. The company is wholly owned with Lindsay Holcomb as president and Paul Holcomb as vice president.

Fall Injures Dr. Gates In Ararat Office
Dr. A. M. Gates, 63, a Patrick County physician, was seriously injured Monday afternoon after a fall in his Ararat office. He sustained a fractured skull and a severe head gash requiring five stitches. He was not hospitalized and will be confined to bed at home for a week.

Surry Telephone System Gets Additional Rural Loan
The North Carolina Rural Electrification Authority approved an extra "B" loan to finish the Surry Telephone Membership Corporation project. The plan covers 526 miles of line and four dial centers at Level Cross Westfield Oak Grove and Zephyr for about 1 972 subscribers over five years. Ararat youth committed to welfare unit after fatal shooting
A 12-year-old Ararat boy was committed to the State Department of Welfare and Institutions following a Monday hearing in Patrick County Juvenile Court related to the June 1 shotgun killing of Edward Claude Smith, 10. Franklin Roy Smith testified that the boy fired from a phonograph corner. others said the gun was not loaded. The youth had been held at a Roanoke detention home since custody.

Death of G T Jones Ararat farmer in Winston-Salem hospital
George Thomas Jones 83, a leading Ararat area farmer, died in a Winston-Salem hospital after ten days there. He lived near Ararat in Eldora township, chaired county roads efforts, and belonged to Union Primitive Baptist Church. Funeral at Union Primitive Baptist Church followed by burial in church cemetery. He is survived by a large family including wife Mary Moseley, three sons, six daughters, two sisters, 25 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
