Two Men Guilty of Gas Theft in Mount Airy
Mount Airy police arrested Jacob Reid McKinley Smith from Selma Alabama and Glenn Alford Cox Jr from Union Pennsylvania after a Sunday morning theft of gas from Surry Concrete Company trucks on Galloway Street. They were tried in Recorder's Court and sentenced to six months on the road with $1,000 bond each and filed appeals.

Fire Department Adds Smoke Ejector to Equipment
The local fire department purchased its first smoke ejector last week to remove smoke and fumes from burning buildings. Fire Chief J Ed Brannock said it will cut smoke damage reduce gas exposure and lower casualty risk. The device draws up to 5000 cubic feet of smoke per minute and can clear three or four rooms from door or window openings.

Ellis Tilley YMCA Worker Dies After Operation
Ellis R. Tilley 50 of 217 Pine Street Mount Airy superintendent of the Mount Airy YMCA died Friday at Baptist Hospital Winston Salem after a serious operation. Born August 10 1904 in Surry County he had worked 21 years at Moody Funeral Home before leading the YMCA. Survived by wife Mollie Matthews Tilley five daughters four grandchildren one brother and four sisters. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday Flat Rock Presbyterian Church Rev Harry S Barnett. Burial Oakdale Cemetery.

Dr Moir Martin told the Martin Memorial Alumni Association that Mount Airy will have the finest 100 bed hospital in North Carolina with air conditioning and oxygen in every room. He said a 59 bed nurses home would cost about 243 550 and equipment 46 000, funded without tax payer dollars. The old hospital had 87 191 in local deposits matched by state and federal funds.

Women’s Brassieres Go On Public Auction In Carroll
Six thousand seven hundred fifty six brassieres will be sold at public auction Thursday June 30 at 1 p m by Perry Manufacturing Company to settle unpaid accounts totaling 1717 52 dollars dating from February 22 1955. The sale includes 237 dozen finished brasieres 48 dozen cut not opened 122 dozen partially finished and 16 dozen part bundles. a single buyer could claim the entire lot.

Teens Injured in Danbury Road Accident
Six teens from Surry County were injured near Danbury Sunday afternoon as a tire blew out causing a rollover on a rural road in Stokes County. Connie Gwaltney and Ralph Cooke endured shoulder and forehead injuries while Donna Ann and Mary Jo Sanda remained overnight for back injury observation. Gary Perry drove the car.
