Two trusties at the Dobson jail walked off Saturday night without notice. Harvey Boose Gravely of Mount Airy and Allen Bingman of Dobson escaped. Jailer Eads said they simply walked off and will be given new jobs elsewhere. Gravely was serving 12 months for assault with a deadly weapon.
A 1950 Ford reported stolen from Toast Friday night was found burned in a creek on Reeves Road Saturday. Patrolman T A Gwaltney said the vehicle was pushed into the creek by an unknown truck. Arnold Fat Combs of Toast reported the theft.
State Highway Patrolman E. E. Lefurgey of Dobson will transfer to Gastonia effective July 1 after two years in Surry County. He owns a home in Gastonia and his wife works at a local bank.
Ralph J. Hardy 22, son of Mr and Mrs John H Hardy Route 1 Siloam recently was promoted to corporal in Germany where he serves as a driver with Company H 8th Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division Training includes intensive maneuvers and realistic field problems He entered the Army in November 1953 and is a Copeland High School graduate of 1951.
Mount Airy Junior Chamber of Commerce earned third place in the national Jaycee competition in the entire population category. The award, based on community service and member involvement, came at the Sith Annual Convention with over 1,500 chapters entering. National officers for the coming year were elected Thursday by delegates at Municipal Auditorium.
A drunken man was arrested Saturday and insisted his cat receive care. Police kept the cat on a desk overnight and the next morning the man retrieved a healthy cat. The incident raised questions about handling animals in custody.
Pat Estes a 17 year old Franklin High School graduate was crowned Miss Mount Airy before about 800 spectators. The Mount Airy Junior Chamber of Commerce called the pageant the most successful yet and Estes will advance to the Miss North Carolina finals at Wilmington July 14-15.
Jay Wesley Whitaker twenty is in Baptist Hospital in critical condition after a Sunday wreck about one mile northwest of Dobson on the Mount Airy highway near the Allison curve. He suffered a fractured skull fractured nose a broken leg and internal injuries. Investigating Patrolman E E LaFurgey said speed contributed and that the car hit a tree after taking the curve.
Sgt B J Clement, a squad leader based near Johnson City Tennessee, completed the Army Arctic indoctrination School at Big Delta Alaska. The report notes his wife Wilma lives at 644 E Dyer St in Johnson City and confirms the training completion and his assignment status.
Mrs. Gertrude Joyce Lowry 68 of this city died at 6 10 p m Friday at Watauga County Hospital Boone after a stroke earlier. She was widow of Thomas J. Lowry and mother of five sons and three daughters with eight grandchildren. Funeral was 2 p m Monday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Oakdale Cemetery.
The son of C. R. Clement of Mount Auburn completed basic training at Camp Atterbury Indiana in February 1951 after graduating from Franklin High School.
Woodrow Wilson Snow 39 of Mount Airy route 3 a farmer in Beulah was found dead near his home Sunday evening. Funeral at Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Coroner Harris ruled likely heart attack, no inquest. Survived by wife Virginia Storm four sons and four daughters and extensive relatives.
Mrs Dorothy Haymore of White Plains was appointed deputy clerk of Surry County Superior Court by Clerk E. W. Lawrence. She previously worked in the clerk’s office at Dobson for two years and is 21 years old. her husband Bobby Haymore serves in the armed forces in Japan.
Mount Airy will stage a unique ten mule hitch in the upcoming horse show with three performances planned. Coach Wallace Shelton said the team from the T and M Ranch in Wytheville Virginia will parade Friday afternoon and Saturday morning making its world’s only presentation a highlight of the event.
Miss Phyllis Gates daughter of Dr and Mrs A M Gates of Ara rat Va graduated June 13 from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in nursing She has taught nursing at Virginia Intermont College and Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and recently studied nursing education at Columbia University in New York City
James Cox of Mount Airy route 1 reported a skill saw valued at about 70 dollars stolen from his automobile while parked in front of his home last week. Cox works as a carpenter in Mount Airy.
In Cat Hollow, Ruben Sechrier was robbed of 50 dollars in cash and a 76 dollar check endorsed already, receiving head injuries. Clinton Tate, 22, and Hildred Bowman, 23, are in jail for investigation. Deputies Monday and Lowe lead the case. Mrs. Berta Hatcher Tilley of Willow Street Winston-Salem died Friday night at City Memorial Hospital with funeral at 4 pm Saturday and burial in Oakdale Cemetery. she leaves husband Rex J. Tilley Sr and children, with church and society ties noted.
Funeral services for Stephen Gilmer Dobbins 69 of Mountain Park were held at Union Cross Baptist Church with three ministers presiding. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Dobbins died Thursday after a six week illness. he was born May 17 1886 in Surry County and worked as a farmer and tobacco market bookkeeper.
Mrs. W. W. Thomas of this city learns her brother T. F. Bryant of Crew Virginia died at midnight Sunday in Farmville Virginia hospital. Born in Yadkin County he was 79 and the oldest Bryant. He leaves four sisters Mrs. Thomas Mrs. A E Steele of Herndon Virginia Mrs S H Steele of Arlington Virginia Mrs John Edwards of Dobson and two brothers R B Bryant of Winston Salem and C W Bryant of Brunswick Georgia.
Glynn Payne announces additional phone service for Westfield Oak Grove and Mountain Park areas served by Surry Telephone Membership Cooperative. Level Cross already has service. a $342 000 REA loan awaiting approval in Washington around July 1 to finish the project. Bids will follow as rights of way are signed. meeting led by Dr. Gerald J. Brown with Westfield officials and local reps.
Mrs Jennie Nichols Jones of Mount Airy White Plains route 4 was taken to Baptist Hospital Sunday afternoon by Moody ambulance after a heart attack. She is reported seriously ill.
