Abandoned Virginia Well Reveals a Giant Black Snake
Workers cleaning the old J W Jarrell farm well near White Sulphur Springs Ararat Virginia found a six foot one inch black snake in a side hole sixty feet down. Bobby Hawks was lowered into the seventy foot well to begin work when warned of the snake by chain above. They pulled the gig and rope snake from the bottom then finished the job and restored water flow. Prior top of ground a five and half foot black snake had been found. The well, dug about 65 years ago, had been unused since last year and was used by a tenant previously.

Bruce Tharrington says a six year plan will paint all county schools with a $42 000 total cost and annual $7 000 appropriations. The Mount Airy High six room addition is awarded to G L Wilson Building Co for 510 000 with total project cost 622 294 including plumbing heating and electrical work. State Board approval expected in July with completion planned for fall.
