Floodwaters from the Ararat River Lovill s Creek and Stewart s Creek Friday night through Saturday devastated corn and tobacco crops in Surry County and damaged bridges and the Mount Airy water line. Rain totals topped 9.45 inches in 24 hours, flooding roads, washing away bridges and threatening the water plant. repair efforts were underway.

James W. Boyd youngest son of Mr and Mrs H S Boyd of this city will arrive in Mount Airy to visit family after five years in Auckland New Zealand with the government. He is American vice counsel in New Zealand and will shortly go to Washington to receive future orders. He left New Zealand Tuesday with his wife and three daughters and will travel via California to Greensboro. He previously spent years in Nicaragua with the State Department after serving as a Marine Corps instructor in Philadelphia.

A man told police his brother was murdered in Lowgap prompting sheriff and officials to rush to Fisher's Gap. They found John Brannock alive on a doorstep. witnesses said a woman fired into the air to scare him, and the argument ended without a fatality.

Car of Jim Vaughn Recovered in West Virginia
Jim Vaughn’s stolen car, taken from his home on May 12, was recovered in Bramwell West Virginia. Charles E. Goins of route 2 was arrested for the theft. The car, bought by Vaughn in February, was returned with minor damage and Goins faces federal trial for violating the National Vehicle Theft Act.

Veteran Fern Hall Arrested For Passing Government Check
Jesse W. Hall 25, a veteran, tried to cash a $150 government check payable to Joe A. Jackson of Jackson Brothers Department Store. He attempted at Jackson Brothers, then failed at First National Bank, bought nails at Midkiff's Hardware cashed there, and fled with over $100 on him. He spent about $17 on taxi and beer before arrest and is jailed on forging and presenting a government check, bond set at $5,000 awaiting grand jury action.

Arrest Made In Shooting In Alleghany County
Alleghany County Sheriff G D Richardson announced Roby Cochran about 36 is held for investigation in the ambush shooting of Mrs Peggy Bowman near Saddle Mountain on June 10. He said several other persons would be questioned and that new information is being developed. Cochran was arrested Monday night with no charges yet filed.

Garden shooting leaves Bowman critically wounded at home
Mrs Bowman was shot at close range with a shotgun while picking strawberries in her garden. She is in critical condition at Martin Memorial Hospital with wounds to the side hip chest and face. Sheriff Richardson expects further action after speaking with Mrs Bowman and says her physician will likely call him when she can be questioned, probably Thursday.

Two Local Firemen Attend Durham School

Manhunt for Black suspect in Mount Airy assault case
Surry County Sheriff seeks Theodore Gwyn a Black man for investigation of an unclothed assault on George Brintle 45 of Mount Airy. Brintle was found hurt in a rain soaked tobacco field near the Mount Airy Lowgap highway and transported to a Gravely home for care.
