Jessup Free Under Bond

One week of Surry County criminal court closed with two murder cases. James Edwards was acquitted of the Mount Airy West Pine Street murder, claiming self defense. Lorry Jessup was found guilty of second degree murder for the Roy Towe shooting at Bunker Woods, marking a second Surry Superior Court second degree murder conviction for him.

Mr and Mrs J R Hines returned from Chapel Hill where they attended the commencement for their son Bob Hines who earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. They will stay in Chapel Hill where they have an apartment and he plans summer study in law.

Oldest Surry Resident Mrs Snow Dies at 104

Mrs. Snow widow of Civil War veteran John A Payne died Friday night at her daughter’s home near Pine Ridge nine miles west of Mount Airy aged 104. She was Surry County’s oldest resident and survived by two sons six daughters 75 grandchildren 248 great grandchildren and 40 great great grandchildren. Funeral at New Bethel Baptist Church followed by burial in the church cemetery.

Well Known Woman Shot By Son In Law

Mrs. Frank McBride a 55 year old farm woman on Mc Bride Road is critically wounded after being shot in the chest on the front porch by her son in law James Madison Hall 26. The gun fired from a .22 rifle as relatives watched. Hall fled toward Virginia after the shooting while his sister and authorities traced him.

Secret Arrests In McMillian Case Motivate Detention

Deputy Rex Tilley arrested Mrs. Rawley McMillian and her two sons Foster Martin and James Goins on a Monday secret operation. They were transported to Dobson jail for safe keeping while under investigation for the murder of McMillian. The arrests, ordered by So- Slate Mountain on June 4, aimed to prevent public knowledge.

Blow Torch Starts Fire At Quality Mills

Several hundred employees left their jobs for minutes Thursday morning when a fire started in the drying room of Quality Mills. A blow torch used to remove bolts on a large tub ignited wood under the tub, causing smoke in the basement. Workers tried extinguishers, but the fire was put out by firefighters with no property damage. cloth stored there had to be washed again.

Mrs. Vannie Thomasson widow of Homer Thomasson died at the local hospital Tuesday about 1 p m aged 71. Her death followed injuries from a June 5 accident when struck by a truck near her home. She once owned the Vannie D cigar brand and later worked with imported wrappers. Survived by two sisters and a brother. funeral Thursday at Moody Funeral Chapel at 2 p m.

Airplane Lands On Highway Near Laurel Bluff

Lester Hall a Beauford youth piloted an Ercoupe to an emergency landing on the old Low gap road near Laurel Bluff Wednesday night about 8. He searched for an airport for an hour but found none and cut a telephone wire while touching down. No damage to the plane and witnesses tried to assist amid fog.

Alleghany Woman Shot and Updated at Local Hospital

Peggy Bowman, 47, widow of Ennis Bowman, of Alleghany County near the Surry line, was hospitalized in serious condition after being shot in the face while picking strawberries near the woods. Bloodhounds were brought to the scene as authorities investigate with Alleghany County Sheriff and other officers.

Former Graniteer Graduates From Page School Today

William E. Foster son of Emma Johnson Foster formerly of this city graduates from the Capital Page School in Washington today. He has served in the U S House for three years and won the Bureau of Internal Revenue American Legion Post No 39 award for outstanding merit. He will enter Wake Forest College to study law after graduation. Mrs Foster is the sister of Editor W M Johnson and daughter of the late J B Johnson.
