Mount Airy area sees 36 arrests Friday to Sunday in a weekend surge. Officers filed warrants citywide and state troopers assisted as seven motorists faced speeding charges and 10 operated a vehicle while intoxicated.
Martha Ann Inman aged 70 was found dead in bed at her Westfield home after a period of ill health. She was born April 30 1885 in Surry County to Cam and Sarah Inman. Funeral services were held at Woodville Baptist Church with multiple ministers and burial in the Inman family cemetery. Survivors include sons Robert Wilbur and Rowland, daughter Mrs Cook, eight grandchildren, a brother and three sisters.
Howard Dixon, 24, of Philadelphia, was arrested June 6 in Mount Airy on assault and robbery charges connected to the beating and theft from Robert Slate of Toast. Slate described two Negro men in a taxi forcing him into a car, taking change, and locking him in a bathroom before abandonment. Dixon faces Recorder's Court trial this week.
Figures show bid closeness with G L Wilson of Statesville winning the general contract at 752 000 though 750 200-752 000 range appeared in figures accepted after an alternate part. Total unit cost to 1 490 000 including furnishings. List lists basic bids for building elevator plumbing electrical air conditioning and refrigeration contracts with multiple northern and southern firms.
Mr. L. A. Armstrong of Mount Airy found a turtle aged at least 75 years on his farm near Ararat. The underside bore J. A. A., 1880, the initials of his brother who died twenty years ago. The owner plans to release the elderly reptile back on the farm.
A Sunday baseball game at Mount Airy High School park mixed White Plains White players with Oak Ridge Negro players. The White Plains team won after one inning amid surprise from the Mount Airy School Board and local fans. Officials said they did not know the game was scheduled.
Dr. Moir S. Martin, chairman of the Northern Hospital of Surry County, said he had not heard from state or federal agencies about bids opened last Tuesday. He will travel to Raleigh to meet Bruce K. Jones and other NC Medical Care Commission members to discuss approval of the low bids.
Mrs Adams an employee of Harrison's Store in this city is a patient at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem where she underwent an operation Monday.
Six traffic accidents occurred on Surry County highways over the weekend with one hospitalized. A Mount Airy pair, Thomas Davis and Gayle Vaughn, plus Billy Duncan from Virginia, were hurt and Vaughn admitted for possible back injury. Other incidents involved Josephine Valentine, Zane Galyean, Charles McMillian, John Green, Harding Smith, Rufus Niston, James Gillespie, and Franklin Needham in crashes on routes 52, 89, Springs Road, and near WPAQ, many under heavy rain or failed brakes, with minor injuries reported and investigations ongoing.
Lawnee Irby Tilton, 18, was convicted of first degree murder in the Carroll County slaying of Eldridge Bunn and sentenced to 99 years in the penitentiary. The verdict came from a Grayson County jury after an 18 minute deliberation at Hillsville.
Surry County's school system gains one high school teacher for the 1955 56 term after State Board allotments. Mountain Park and White Plains see changes, with White Plains gaining a high school post. Allocations depend on average daily attendance and the best six of seven months.
The Dobson telephone exchange, the county's smallest, receives a new dial system to replace obsolete equipment. Nichols and Snyder completed a building for the gear, and installation was set to begin. Central Telephone will add private lines and expand service while keeping current operations uninterrupted. The change increases capacity from Mount Airy to Dobson and other nearby exchanges, with Dobson housing about 231 phones.
Mrs. Cullen Merritt of Rockford Street was carried to Baptist Hospital after slipping on stairs at home and fracturing her hip. Her condition is listed as satisfactory. Her son Will D. Merritt of Atlantic Beach, Florida arrived Sunday to be with the family.
The Surry County draft board says there will be no physical examinations or inductions for Surry residents in June and July. May saw 12 volunteers sworn in to meet the quota, with eight others rejected and returning home. May 16 also saw 19 men go for preinduction exams led by Warren Tillotson Wright of Pilot Mountain.
George Snow Jr son of Mr and Mrs George K Snow Sr of the city has accepted a position with the Drexel Furniture Company in Drexel. He is a graduate of North Carolina State College in Raleigh this year and will begin duties on June 20.
Mrs. C. A. Boyles’s mother, Mrs. Terellingeree, aged 76, died at her Lagrenburg home on Monday. The deceased was mother of Mrs. Ronald Boyles of this city.
