Mount Airy appoints J Marion Burke to school board

J Marion Burke of Mount Airy was named to the Mount Airy School Board to fill the seat of W S Porter who resigned effective June 30. Robert A Smith was reappointed to a three year term. Burke and Smith were chosen by unanimous vote led by Commissioner John P Frank. Burke, a 21 year insurer and realty operator, is a Navy veteran and active church member married to Mary Henri Gillum with two children.

Jones Named Commissioner by Clerk

R P Jones a Democrat nominee for county commissioner was appointed Monday to fill the seat of the late Marshal C Fowler. The appointment by Clerk E W Lawrence is effective immediately. Jones of Mount Airy would have joined the board in December as a regular member, given party norms in Surry County.

Public Reminded Of Law Against Air Rifles

City board heard repeated complaints about youths shooting air rifles and endangering children's eyesight. City Attorney A B Carter reminded officials an existing ordinance bans air rifle use within corporate limits. Parents urged to keep children from using them. mothers are worried.

City to transfer gas franchise to Southern Propane

City commissioners approved transferring the franchise from Piedmont Gas Company to Southern Propane Gas Company of Mount Airy. Charles Lawrence stated plans to convert to a tank system, keep gas prices, and upgrade customer equipment at no charge. He also intends to buy all Piedmont Gas Company undertakings in the city.

Night Gas Leak Halted On South Main Street

Workmen and Piedmont Gas Company crews battled a gas leak on South Main Street after an underground cable cut ignited fumes and a flame blaze in Dr. Renzo Sutter's yard. Fire officials credited smudge pots with preventing a possible explosion as crews plugged the line around midnight.

Six Mount Ainy citizens will travel to Greensboro Saturday to be initiated into the Shrine as Oasis Temple members. The initiates are Rev. W. E. Burrus, Joe B. Graves, Roger W. Carl M Baber Undergoes Surgery At Elkin Hospital

Carl M Baber manager of the local Employment Office entered Elkin Hospital last Monday for an operation performed that day. He had suffered a heart attack weeks earlier and hoped to return to work Monday but grew ill requiring surgery. He is to remain hospitalized this week then recuperate at home before resuming duties.

Bids Set For Major Mount Airy Street Paving

City commissioners let ten street paving contracts totaling 60550. Sherifl Paving Co of Winston Salem won curb and guttering for 32750 and Graham and Son won base stone and treatment for 27800. It’s the largest residential paving project in the city’s history and may be finished before winter unless weather delays occur.

Tractor-Trailer Accident Sparks $12,000 Loss in Mountains

Abraham Glenn of Kingsport Tennessee escaped serious injury when air line brakes failed causing his tractor-trailer carrying 21 hogsheads of burley tobacco from Bowling Green Kentucky to Reynolds Tobacco in Winston-Salem to plunge down Fancy Gap Mountain after he leapt clear at 2:20 am. The truck traveled 800 to 1,000 feet before stopping on a boulder. The trailer and tractor were a total loss with about 21 hogsheads and 21,000 pounds of tobacco discarded.

New Morning Worship Hours At First Baptist

Beginning Sunday morning and through September 2, First Baptist Church will hold worship at 8 30 with Sunday school at 9 45. The pastor Rev Preston J Taylor announced the summer hours. Communion will be observed Sunday.

Mrs. Harvey Boyd Returns Home After Cataract Surgery

Mrs. Harvey Boyd has been released to recover at her Oakdale Street home after a several day stay at City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem where she underwent an eye cataract operation. Her condition is reported satisfactory.

Employment Office To Move On July 1

The North Carolina Employment Office in the Haynes Building on North Main Street will relocate on July 1. Staff have not been told the new location yet, with several sites under consideration. J. B. Haynes confirmed he was informed the office will vacate the building on July 1.
