Mount Airy will participate in the National Vehicle Safety Check with lanes on Gilmer Street. Dr. L J Moorefield Jr urges all drivers to have brakes lights tires and other key items inspected for public safety and to aim for 100 percent vehicle participation.
J Rhoten Hines retires from Mount Airy Furniture Company after fifty three years and nine months as lumber yard foreman and lumber inspector. He plans gardening roses mowing the lawn and helping run a tourist home while staying active with church work and family visits. He lists six children and eleven grandchildren and continues to assist in Sunday meals.
Patrick County man Ramey Clay Young 20 of Ara rat Va was arrested in Mount Airy Sunday night after a nearly two year manhunt. He faced an assault with a deadly weapon charge for a October 2 1954 cutting incident in Surry County. Bond set at 500 for June 11 court appearance. Young is on Army leave stationed in New Jersey. Sgt G M Eldridge and Officer Henry Gardner made the arrest.
Herbert Hall of North Main Street is a patient at Baptist Hospital after being admitted last Monday. He has eye trouble and is under observation. He works at Barber Hosiery Mills.
Governor Hodges announced a one week special session of the General Assembly in Raleigh for July 23 to consider stand by laws and constitutional amendments. The aim is to back his school segregation stance and address tuition grants for private education under a limited agenda.
Mrs Sophie Vogel Samet 63 of Junction Street died Sunday at Baptist Hospital Winston Salem from a heart attack. Widow of Morris Samet she was born March 15 1893 in New York City and belonged to Beth David Synagogue Greensboro and American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving sons Lester and Jerome and daughters Sylvia Gray and Clara Nussbaum plus 11 grandchildren. Funeral Monday at 11 with Rabbi King and burial near Greensboro.
George Haston Collins 61 of Mount Airy route 2 died unexpectedly at his Granite Quarry home Sunday evening. A native of Surry County he worked for North Carolina Granite Corp and later Deatherage Stone Works. Survived by his wife Rosa Baldwin and six children, funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Flat Rock Baptist Church with burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Body to be taken from Moody Funeral Home to the home today. Pallbearers listed as Harvey Day.
Dr. W. Kenneth Goodson praised Central Methodist Church members for funding the new parsonage as more than 200 attendees celebrated the dedication at the Barke Woods home in Mount Airy. Rev. Walter Lee Lanier received the key, and J. G. Greenwood earned praise for construction.
Dewey Cain Sr 58 a Harmony route 2 farmer died Sunday afternoon at a Statesville hospital after ten days of serious illness. He was born April 15 1898 in Iredell County the son of A J and Alice Cain. He is survived by his wife Aretha Wallace Cain a daughter Mrs George Evans of Mocksville three sons P D Cain Jr of this city E Leroy Cain of Charlotte and C Dean Cain of Greensboro four grandchildren five brothers and three sisters. Funeral services set for 2 30 p m today at Sandy Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The body was taken to the home yesterday.
Frances Allene Harris Martin 24 of Norfolk Virginia died Sunday at Norfolk General Hospital after a sudden illness. Born October 12 1931 in Surry County she was daughter of Major and Rosemma Harris. She is survived by her parents two brothers Odell Harris and John Harris three sisters Mrs William Hodges Mrs T C Truesdale and Mrs James Haney. Funeral services held today at Piney Grove Baptist Church conducted by Rev Silas Smith with burial at the Dobson home of her parents.
