Six Virginians Arrested After Cross Found In Car Trunk
Six youths aged 16 to 20 from Ararat Virginia were arrested by Mount Airy police on warrants from a local citizen. A wooden cross wrapped in burlap was found in the trunk of the car. The group faced charges of property damage and related offenses after an earlier incident at a Snack Bar. They were released on bond. a hearing is set for June 18 before Judge Westmoreland.

Patrick Gas Station Robbed in Meadows of Dan
The Parkway Service Station at Meadows of Dan was entered last Thursday night and stock valued at about 800 dollars was stolen. Employee George Wood discovered the robbery on arriving to open at 8 a.m. About 40 tires seven cartons of cigarettes and four cases of motor oil were missing. Sheriff J P Hanby reported the details citing Jack Age of Agee as a source.

Station burglary reported at east window entry
Banks and partners own the station. Entry was gained by breaking an east side window which was unlocked. A large garage door was opened, suggesting a truck was used to haul away stolen items. Formal opening was planned for next weekend.

Third Rabid Fox Found In County
A rabid fox was killed last Thursday near Ivy Green Church between Pine Ridge and Round Peak Drive. Veterinarian H C Jackson said a Winston Salem lab letter confirmed the fox was rabid. Watt Bryant saw the fox acting oddly and killed it with a stick. the head was sent to Winston Salem by Guy Sparger. It is the county’s third rabid fox this year, with two prior in the Lowgap Roaring Gap area.

Ararat Soldier Leads Field Exercise in Germany
Specialist Third Class Arthur Jessup of Ararat Virginia took part in a field training exercise with the 4th Infantry Division in Germany. A demolition specialist with the 12th Infantry Regiment based at the 2nd Battalion headquarters, he entered the Army in June 1953 after completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. He attended Blue Ridge High School and worked for General Motors in Linden New Jersey.

Man 35 Hurt In Mount Airy Auto Wreck
Charles Arrington of Mount Airy route 2 was seriously injured when his car failed to curve on Highway 89. He skidded 201 feet into a ditch, then 57 feet to reenter the road before stopping. He suffered a broken back neck injury punctured lung and serious head injury. Patrolman J P Rhyne investigated.

A Sunday afternoon tornado in Pine Ridge Surry County destroyed a large barn near the old race track. The Hulls Howard and Charlie owned the building which held 1000 bales of hay and many tools. The loss was complete but partially insured.
