The Employment Security Commission office will be closed Friday December 24 for Christmas Holidays and reopen Tuesday December 28. Friday claimants report December 31 and file for two weeks. Saturday and Monday claimants report Monday January 3 and file for two weeks.
Judge H H Llewellyn verdicts Aldeen Byrd guilty of assault on Hubert Towe and binds case to the Superior Court in Dobson. Leroy Martin and James Young found not guilty and freed after two weeks on $3000 bonds. Byrd faces additional $1000 bonds for prior assaults.
Mount Airy Mercantile Association directors met Monday afternoon and set holiday closing dates. The group will remain open January 1 and on Thursday afternoons, with Thursday closures starting January 6.
Bertha M Shinault announced that the Dobson Register of Deeds office will not issue marriage licences from Friday noon until Tuesday morning December 28.
Surry County citizens contributed $2,796 to the annual Tuberculosis Association Christmas Seal campaign through Tuesday, below the $6,000 goal with $2,204 still needed. Miss Louise Bailey, chairman, urged residents to mail in their donations promptly.
At the business meeting of Demolay Commandery No. 44 on Tuesday night December 14 officers were re elected for the year including Carl M. Baker Commander J B Combs Generalissimo Sam A Hennis Jr Captain General and Weldon Parker Treasurer Rev J W Frank elected Recorder succeeding Christopher and retired at his own request Appointive officers were named with A B Macon prelate C B Shelton Senior Warden Paul Calloway Junior Warden P D Cain Jr Warden Dilard Loflin Sentinal James R Bray Standard Bearer Earl Ramey Sword Bearer Howard Poy Guard R Posey Jones Guard J C Warren Guard All officers were installed by past Grand Commander H M Poy.
Graham Parks earned a B. S. in Commerce from the University of North Carolina this week. He will join Western Auto Supply Company and go to Charlotte for six weeks of training after the new year. Mrs Parks and young Marty remain with her parents.
Moravian Church Grace Auditorium was filled to capacity for the annual Christmas love feast and Candie Service last Sunday night. Rev. Herbert B. Johnson presided with prayers by Rev. C. D. Crouch. The choir directed by Edward Pruett and organist Virginia Poore performed admired anthems. Charlies B. Adama of Ardmore Moravian Church spoke on Jesus as light and Savior, candlelight utilizing red wrapped papers. Morning service featured the Cloke and Kirt cantata Childe Jesus with soloists Mrs. James Good Mildred Pruett Mary Jo Dillon and others.
The Mount Airy post office reports record first class mail handling with 41 000 pieces processed Monday at the canceling machine. Incoming and outgoing parcel post reach historic Christmas levels, with 35 000 first class pieces Friday and 36 000 on Tuesday.
Little Carlene Blizzard, 11, of Junction Street, is diagnosed with Hodgkins disease deemed incurable by doctors and given about two years to live. Despite illness she stays cheerful and seeks friends, inviting readers to send her a get well or friendship card.
Pete Orville Rutledge aged 48 of Pinnacle Route 1 died in a Winston-Salem hospital at 1 30 a m Friday after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p m Sunday at Brims Grove Baptist Church with Elders W J Brown and Ed Priddy in charge. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Rose's Dime Store suffered a fire last week with stock damage estimated at 60000 by Rose's insurance adjuster and reports suggesting near 50000. An adjuster will assess the building damage. Temporary sleep ers will be used through Christmas. Electrical wiring in the basement must be replaced and elevator work done. Rose firm executive vice president R B Rose Henderson sent a 60 check to the local fire department praising their work and urging officers for recognition.
City offices will close December 25 and 27 and January 1 for holidays. Police fire and water plant workers are exempt. Merchants asked not to place trash on streets on these dates.
North Carolina Granite Corporation plans to provide gratis a twelve inch span granite miniature replica of the Wright brothers memorial at Kitty Hawk for an annual aviation public service trophy. The award, to be given by the National Aeronautic Association, honors significant enduring service to aviation in the United States and has prior honorees including Dr. William Durand.
The Z. T. Smith Estate sale in Mount Airy attracted buyers for a morning and afternoon viewing. D. and Hodge, local auto dealers, purchased the estate for $26,700, while a large Virginia Street lot went to H. A. Johnson for $17,000. Several other valuable business and residential properties changed hands.
With no opposition registered the city limits expansion gained official status January 1 1949 The extended area includes the North Mount Airy section Burke and Wrenn developments and Oakdale Street residents The final action completed the formal establishment of the new boundary
