Torrential rain late Thursday into Friday sent Lovill s creek and the Ararat river over banks for the third time this year. Lovill s bridge on Pine Street sustained damage as water reached a two year high, while water backed up sewer systems and flooded basements in Mount Airy. Flooded bottoms ruined corn crops and forced river bed and bottom cleanup efforts as Haynes coal yard flooded for the third time. White Sulphur Springs reported its highest level in years with sand and gravel operations affected.

Robert W. James Dies in Highway Collision near Kinston
Robert W. James of Elkin and Mount Airy native dies in an automobile crash on the highway near Kinston Sunday. He is survived by his wife Grace Snow James and two sons, with funeral at his home and interment at Hollywood Cemetery. He was about 38 and an engineer with the North Carolina Highway Commission, temporarily located at Rocky Mount.

Man Fires Gun At Wrong Party
Glenn Dunford, 19, of Toast, was jailed on charges he fired a shotgun through the rear of a car injuring Russell Allred, a service station worker, and a Lincoln State mill worker. Police say Dunford, from Lewgap highway at McKnight's hill, shot at men he believed were rocks-throwers near his home last Sunday night.

Highway Patrol Debuts New Car in Mount Airy

Slot machines seized across Surry County locations
Surry County law officers recovered six pin-table slot machines this week. Two were found at Paul and Pauls, one at Pryers Service Station in Pilot Mountain, and three at Places in Level Cross. Prices Improve in Bright Belt Tobacco Market
Tobacco prices in the bright belt showed gains with several markets posting higher averages than opening day. Kinston moved about 1.4 million pounds, Tarboro sold 126,124 pounds for 22,550.27 dollars, and Wallace traded 225,000 pounds at 17.50 per hundred. Williamston sold 293,000 at just under 17 cents, while large lots and poorer leaf kept overall averages subdued.
