Surry County men Hardy of Siloam Perry Taylor of White Plains and N J Martin of Dobson were named to a state flue cured tobacco growers committee to study a 1940 referendum on crop control. J E Winslow of Greensville announced the appointments. The panel will meet in Raleigh around September 1 and survey county sentiment on a tobacco referendum as prices hover near 19 cents. Joe Jackson of Mount Airy heads the local committee and will announce plans soon.

Woman Shot While Ironing on Back Porch
Mrs. Joe Jessup about 50 was severely injured Saturday when a rifle bullet pierced her hip and lodged in the wall while she ironed on her back porch. The shot came from a gun held by children about 1300 feet away on A L Bunker’s farm. Authorities reported the injury was serious and initial treatment advised against moving her to a hospital to avoid hemorrhage. The Jessups live on Stewarts Creek near White Plains highway, with the Bunker home opposite.
