Last Confederate Veteran of Surry Near 100 Quietly Nearing Century
Surry County’s last living Confederate veteran A. Cockerham, born 1648, will turn 100 on October 9. He lives near Mitchell’s River in a three room house, recalls past days, and credits longevity to a tobacco and alcohol free life, outdoor farming, and plenty of open air. His family includes sons James, Alex, Grover, and grandchildren in various states. Corbett Wallis of Elkin is among many descendants.Only five Confederate veterans remain in North Carolina.

Jacqueline Dorminy announces a Fine Arts Kindergarten for pre-schoolers in Mount Airy opening when epidemic restrictions lift. Located in Opera Club Room on Willow Street, classes run nine to twelve, five mornings a week. Programs include music, rhythm band, dramatics, tap, ballet, and piano with qualified teachers. Elmer Oscar Jenkins, 55, died unexpectedly at home 193 Orchard Street at 4 p m Monday. A Mount Airy service station operator, he faced financial loss three years ago. Funeral 2 30 p m Wednesday at home with burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Survived by wife Doris Burcham, a son Herbert Jenkins of Jarrettaville Maryland, a daughter Margaret Jenkins, three brothers Harry Ed and Lee Jenkins of Hillsville Virginia, and sister Mrs Monty Vass of Hillsville Virginia.

Mrs. Edward W. Jones secretary of Fowler Motor Company is recovering from a deep gash cut last Saturday morning. She was pushing a window when it shattered and cut her arm above the wrist. She was taken to the local hospital where stitches were applied and reports say she is doing nicely.

Police Car Burns In Front Of Fire Dept
A tan Ford police car parked on Moore Avenue in front of the police department caught fire at 4 a.m. causing interior damage. Neil Hennin started the blaze three blocks away and alerted firefighters next door. The city has $2,000 set aside for new police cars and aims to replace two patrol cars by trading in old units.

Veterans Park Rodeo and Circle K Ranch to Open Next Week
Veterans Park will host a four day rodeo from August 26 to 28 presented by the Austrian Legion and VFW with nightly eight o'clock shows and a Saturday 3 PM matinee. Circle K Ranch Rodeo will feature top cowboys and cowgirls, a street parade, and a $50 reward for any horse that cannot be ridden. Proceeds go toward a local swimming pool and veteran activities.

Burial for Pfc Harvey A Sikes Held at Mount Airy Church
The body of Pfc Harvey A Sikes 20 son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Sikes was returned for burial after death in action May 11 1948 in Northern Laizon. Funeral service was Wednesday at Holly Springs Baptist Church Mount Airy with Rev Delmar Hodges and Chaplain J Sydney Gardner officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery with full military rites. Survivors include his wife Ruby Dawson, his parents a daughter Katherine Sikes a sister Maybell Payne and grandfather Sam Sikes of Galax Va.
