Police chase ends in wreck during stolen auto pursuit

In Airy two 16 year olds Pete Ward and Pyles were involved as youths sought after a stolen car. The driver Tommie Lee fled police, speeding and hit and run charges followed. Ward faced aiding and abetting. The chase ended when the car crashed into a wall on Rockford Street, causing over $200 in damage and sending Ward to custody.

Pastor Bernard Smith Accepts Wesleyan Church Appointment

Bernard Smith, pastor at Wesleyan Methodist Church, has accepted a surprise appointment to Spray Wesleyan Church. The move was recommended by his advisory group and follows a conference discussion about an unresolved stationing issue. Smith and his family will relocate and begin duties on Sunday with the appointment effective Monday.

Parkway Traffic Up Sharply Over July Figures

Figures released by Sam P P Weems superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway show 772,202 people in 227,998 cars used the route in July. The totals rise 241,118 or 14.6 percent from June 1965 and 37,175 or 5.1 percent from July 1954.

Car Stolen and Recovered Near Stuart

Fetelle Hodge of Mount Airy reported her 1949 Plymouth stolen from Produce Street. The gas tank was said to be empty and the car had a lock. It was found seven miles from Stuart, Va. No arrest has been made.

Thirteen New Teachers Join Mount Airy Schools

Thirteen new teachers will join the Mount Airy faculties this year as the school system prepares for opening on Tuesday September 6 under Superintendent L B Pendergraph. The list includes Mrs Josephine N Snyder Mrs Pauline M Winmbish Mrs Georgia F Stanley Mrs Elizabeth C Reece and others across six schools with detailed postings by school.

Boyles to Open Ready To Wear In Winston-Salem

Mount Airy Fire Chief J Ed Brannock was elected vice president of North Carolina’s fourth fire district at a New Bern three day convention. Clarence Morris of Albemarle was elected state president. The Buena Vista Shop Inc formed by Boyles family will open in Winston-Salem at the Thruway Center with 25 other shops and a 1500 car lot.

Franklin School Announces 1955 56 Faculty Lines

Principal J C Hiatt announced the Franklin School staff for the 1955 56 term. New teachers join grades one through three and the upper grades, with several graduates of ASTC. The high school will include ten teachers.

Ground-breaking ceremony marks start on 100-bed hospital

A formal ground-breaking for the Northern Hospital District of Surry County’s 100-bed hospital was held Tuesday at the future site off Rockford and Worth Streets. About 125 people attended led by Dr Moir B Martin and board members including Mayor W F Carter Jr and John Simmons. Construction by G L Wilson of Statesville begins after rain delays. completion is expected in about two years with a 59% bed nurses home planned on the Hadley property.

Virginia Youth Injured in Franklin Road Accident

Kenneth Ayers Jr., 16, of Ara rat VA and Blue Ridge High School student, was hit by a truck while on highway work for an engineering firm near Franklin two weeks ago. He suffers multiple fractures including both hips and a broken left leg. his parents stay with him at Franklin hospital.

Rites Held For Mrs John Badgett

Mrs Lillie Webb Badgett 77 died Tuesday in a Morganton hospital after a three year illness. Born March 27 1878 in Yadkin County she was the widow of John Badgett who died in 1950. Funeral services were held at 10 30 am Thursday at Jones Funeral Home chapel with Dr D B McCarthy officiating. Burial followed at Oakdale Cemetery. Surviving are son Elmer W Badgett Mount Airy two sisters Mrs W M Denny Winston Salem and Mrs Thomas C Norman East Bend.

Two Surry Boys Attend American Junior Red Cross Camp

Two high school students from Surry County John Midkiff and Sam Inman left for a 10 day training camp at Camp Green Cove in Tuxedo North Carolina. The leaders will train at the American Junior Red Cross program with six southeastern states represented. Expenses are paid by the Surry County chapter Red Cross. The course covers Junior Red Cross activities swimming and first aid with recreation included.

Autopsy Finds Natural Causes in Local Youth Death

The autopsy on Roger Lee Willard, who died several weeks ago, concluded natural causes as the cause of death. The report was released this week by the Sheriff’s Department after the autopsy was completed soon after the death.

Betty Jo Payne Returns Home After Hospital Surgery

Betty Jo Payne 16 returned home from Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after surgery to amputate her left leg. Her condition is good and she will be able to walk at home with crutches. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Payne of Andrew Street and a rising junior at Mount Airy High School.

Davis Enters Navy Academy as 1106 Midshipmen Begin Indoctrination

W L Davis son of Mr and Mrs Wade H Davis of Grace Street Mount Airy joins 1106 new midshipmen at the U S Naval Academy. Davis a Mount Airy High School graduate of June 1955, entered on a Senatorial appointment and was sworn in June 29. The plebe class of 1959 starts indoctrination ahead of the September 6 academic year.

Williams Youth Returns Home

L. J. Williams, 19, returned home this week from Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after several weeks as a patient. He was seriously injured July 7 in an automobile crash on highway 52-A about one mile south of Mount Airy. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Williams of Lendon Lane.

Speight Graduates From Textile School At State College

George Speight son of Mr and Mrs C L Speight graduated from Textile School and the Air Force ROTC at State College in Raleigh during Saturday exercises. He was a member of the Phi Psi Society and the Arnold Air Society. His parents attended the exercises. He will work at Barber Hosiery Mill in this city until November 18 when he reports for Air Force service.
