Mount Airy troops from Headquarters Company under Capt. C. E. Chapp and first sergeant Jack G. Hardy joined Task Force C assembled from the 120th Infantry for disaster duty in Hurricane Diane areas. The 40th Infantry Division at Fort Bragg formed three crack communications teams with over 70,000 dollars of electronics, while 22 six by six trucks from the 30th Division moved to reinforce National Guard units in Kinston, Washington, and Greenville as training resumed.

Mrs Bertha Stevens Pack 37 of Cloudville Virginia died at Salem after a brief illness. She was born February 22 1918 in Patrick County daughter of Ed and Esther Stevens. Survivors include her husband James Pack two sons Eugene and Tommie and three daughters Ruby Lennis and Carolyn all at home her parents of Pilot Mountain five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church at 2 pm Sunday with burial in the church cemetery.

Valerie M. Tyft five-year-old daughter of Carl and Betty Lou Tyft of Baltimore died in a Roanoke Virginia hospital from injuries in an automobile trailer tractor crash near Rocky Mount. Her mother also injured and Nadine Tyft minor injuries. The accident occurred as high winds of Hurricane Diane blew the Tyft car into a tractor trailer. Virginia officers found no one responsible. Isaac F Riggs of Mount Airy North Carolina serves as a rifleman in Company G 12th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division in Germany. The Ivy division of the U S Seventh Army trains with intensive maneuvers and field problems as Riggs arrived in Europe last month after basic training at Camp Gordon. He graduated White Plains High School in 1954 and worked for Sears Roebuck before joining the Army in January.
