Tobacco Farmers From Surry Go To Canada For Season
Several Surry County farmers join a tobacco belt in Canada from Detroit north to Niagara Falls. Dan Hemmings of Dobson moved there last winter and has grown tobacco for years. Others travel in spring to plant, harvest, and return in fall, with cutting and curing duties lasting about six weeks. Citizens such as R. P. Elkin Bank Opens Under New Charter
The Bank of Elkin opened Tuesday under a new charter with Cleve Llewellyn of Dobson as president and cashier. W. S. Gough and Garland Johnson were named vice president and assistant cashier, with a six-member board including W. A. Neaves and J. R. Poindexter. The bank assumed assets of the old Bank of Elkin, issued 37500 in capital and surplus, and will handle notes from the former bank while Llewellyn also runs the Surry County Loan and Trust Co. Plans circulated for a Mount Airy branch and a Surry County three-bank chain pending state approval. Eva Hancock will lead the Dobson bank branch when Llewellyn is in Elkin.

Teens Bound Over In Round Peak Robbery Case
Rufus Gardner and Lote Greenwood, about 18, were bound to Dobson court on a highway robbery charge after a long hearing before Magistrate N. E. Boyles at Round Peak. They are jailed in default of a $2000 bond. Evidence tied to a recent hold up of A. Holder, a merchant, by two masked men nearby.

Orphans To Give Concert In City

City To Sell Land For Taxes
At a special meeting of the town commissioners taxes are due on certain lands and a tax sale is ordered for the first Monday in October. Advertising will begin after September first. The county plans no tax sale before December.
Receiver Gets Bid On Creed Book Store
A. G. Webb as receiver offered Creed Book Store for public auction Monday and received a $500 bid from Mrs. Mabel Mitchell. Webb deemed the bid unsatisfactory and is negotiating with other bidders for a higher price. Inventory lists stock at $2400 and fixtures at $1700.

Fire Ravages Davis Home. Loss Estimated at 12000
A 4 A.M. blaze destroyed the C W Davis house next to the Gentry home, with 11 rooms and precious possessions lost. Davis estimates at least 12000 in damage and 7000 in insurance. the Davises escaped with no belongings. The Gentry terrier raised alarms by barking before the fire was discovered.
