Farmers' Chicken Roosts Are Raided
A large dog roams the Laurel Bluff area killing poultry. About 150 hens have died in two weeks with tracks corroborating dog involvement. Farmers Walter McGee Jess Thomas and Edgar Carter report heavy losses including 40 chickens killed in one night. Chickens were bitten on the back and badly mutilated. Neighboring dogs that had been at large have been stopped, and officials believe the raids will end.

County Tax Rate Held at 85 Cents Despite Cuts

Mount Airy School selects new faculty and sets opening date
The Mount Airy city board elected the faculty for the Mount Airy school unit at a Tuesday meeting in the high school. The opening date is September 4 with a full teachers meeting on September 2 at 10 A M. Salem will not operate its own school but transport pupils to Mount Airy. Bannertown remains under Mount Airy supervision with Prof. T B Altman as teacher and principal. L B Pendergraph was elected superintendent. Commissioners Reject Two Week Civil Court Term
A Surry County bar delegation failed to persuade county commissioners to order a two week civil term at month end. Officials cited a $400 weekly cost and the county’s tight finances, opting instead to reserve the October term’s second week for civil cases and the first week for criminal matters. The Governor had called a special term, but legal action to override the decision seems unlikely. Mrs Jacobs of Staunton Dies in Virginia
The mother of Dr LT Jacobs pastor of the First Baptist Church Staunton Va died Friday night at the Jacobs home in Staunton where she had lived most of the time. She had been in frail health for years. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon with burial at Orange Court House Va.
Carroll Farmer Commits Death by Own Action
The story recalls Mr. Marshall, about 50, found shot through the heart at his home near Hillaville last Sunday afternoon during the Snake Creek meeting. He had prior troubles including an officer shooting incident in Hillsville and a later community shooting by his son. He had been running the Wilkinson mill on the Danville pike and had spoken of death by his own action on several occasions.

Two Young Men Hold Up Merchant Near Round Peak
A merchant from Round Perak area and two companions were held up on Willow street after a car stop. The robber, masked and with a pistol, took about $25 from the purse. accomplice hid in bushes and retrieved the money. Police arrested two Round Peak youths Wednesday afternoon as investigation continued.
