Storm on the North Sea recalls wreck of the Stanley under Hank Cowden
In 1896 Henry S. Cowden of Chicago recalls aboard the four masted bark Stanley homeward from Calcutta with jute and cotton when a sudden North Sea gale drove the ship aground off Texel. The crew fought for survival as boats capsized, workers perished, and rockets alerted a rescue from Texel. Hank and others reach the Hercules at Nieuw Diep while fifty fishermen perish in the same storm.
