Rainfall Totals Reported Across Community

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the public lending library opening at D'Lees Shop on Saturday May 14 with hours 10 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm. East Texas tomato acreage dips in leading counties

A recent check shows tomato acreage in East Texas’ leading county is down versus earlier estimates. Rosborough reports about 20 percent less land devoted to tomatoes than a year ago. Cherokee and Henderson counties hold about last year’s acreage, while other East Texas counties show declines. See TOMATOES page 3c.

Holman Downs Moulton Eagles Triumph In 25 11 Victory

Holman Eagle hitters pounded two Moulton pitchers for 20 hits including four homers in a 25 to 11 LCT Lea gue win Sunday. G Roznovsky and E Arndt homered and Holman committed no errors while Moulton made 10 miscues aiding the offense. Holman meets LaGrange next Sunday at 3 00 p m. Theatre opening dates set under new management

Mr and Mrs Bill Reeves announced this week the opening dates for the local theatre. May 20 and 21 have been selected as the first dates under the new management with further announcements to follow in next week’s paper.

Lavaca-Colorado Game Association to Hold Annual Meeting

The Lavaca-Colorado County Game Conservation Association plans its annual meeting and barbecue at the O. J. Woytek camp on Highway 90A between Sheridan and Sublime this Sunday May 15. Ramsey Loses Court Decision on Campaign Spending Suit

Austin Lt. Gov. Ben Ramsey lost an effort to halt statements in an anticipated campaign spending suit by C. T. Johnson. The Texas Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 to dissolve a January temporary stay. Johnson, a defeated lieutenant governor candidate, had sought to preserve testimony from Vernon Sanford in a potential case. He has not filed suit against Ramsey.

Tax Bill Hearing Opens on Gasoline and Miscellaneous Taxes

The State Affairs Committee held public hearings on a tax bill passed by the House. Proposals include taxes on snuff cigars packaged tobacco and an extra one cent per gallon on gasoline. Amendments add taxes on chemicals gross receipts of certain businesses and motel parking lots.
