Shortened school terms feared without new revenue

Lavaca County school officials and patrons urge Gov Gus Russekl and lawmakers to protect public schools from shrinking state per capita funds and revenue losses. They warn terms could drop from two to four months or more if additional sources are not found, noting rural schools face greater cuts.

Centennial Club Formed in Gonzales County

A Gonzales County Centennial Club was organized at the chamber of commerce rooms in Gonzales. Henry Rees Jr was elected president, Dr W T Dawe vice president, and Mrs W J Hildebrand secretary treasurer. Committees were named for ways and means membership history and research publicity.

Komensky PTA Meeting Delayed To March 3

Bad weather and poor roads postpone Komensky PTA gathering until Friday March 3 chaired by F. K. Hrnekr. Miss Lillie Halata read minutes. Arbor Day trees planted eight grafted pecans donated by A. E. Technik and five by teachers with support from George Technik Wm. Wenske F. K. Hinck Frank Bohuslav and others. Next meeting set for April 6 with details to follow.

Mrs Wm Woehler Sr Dies Suddenly In Lavaca County

Mrs William Woehler Sr a respected local citizen died suddenly Tuesday night March 14 at her home south of here after a heart attack at about 11 o clock. Funeral and burial were held in Moulton with Rev A H Falkenberg presiding. she was born May 14 1874 and died at 58 years 10 months. She is survived by her husband two sons Edmund and William Woehler Jr one sister and four brothers.

Yoakum schools may close at end of seventh month or March 15, per Superintendent George P. Barron. Tax collections in the district run about 12000 dollars short of the budget targets.

Cullen 32 per cent beer bill passes House in blowout vote

In Washington on March 14 the Cullen 32 per cent beer bill sailed through the House 316 to 97 amid three hours of debate. The measure, expected to raise 126 to 150 million dollars annually, drew 58 Democrats and 39 Republicans in opposition, while 238 Democrats 76 Republicans and five Farmer Laborites supported it with cheers. The last House vote on the bill was 230 to 160 on December 31.

Austin, March 11. H. W. Stillwell president of the State Teachers Association says the state school fund may not exceed $8 per capita next year unless new revenue measures pass. He questions auditor figures and urges teachers statewide to back revenue increases.

Headlight Law Repealed In Texas Action

Governor Miriam A. Ferguson signed a bill repealing the automobile headlight law. The legislature approved the repeal to take effect immediately, removing the 25 cent headlight test fee required to obtain a car license.

Time for Filing Income Taxes Is Extended 2 Weeks

Washington March 14 The deadline for filing income tax returns was extended from March 15 to March 31 by the internal revenue bureau acting on a treasury department decision. Those who defer filing must pay 6 percent per year interest on the first quarterly installment from March 15.
