Pecan Leadership in Gonzales County Texas

One sixth of Texas pecan crop comes from Gonzales County. In 1931 the four million pound harvest brought 225000 dollars to the county. Native groves along the Guadalupa River are developed by County Agent J M Saunders and the extension horticulturist. They promote budding, brush clearing, and pasture improvements to boost nut quality and yield. A pecan school trained 50 men to rework trees and increase premiums.

Texas House approves $1 poll tax limit in bill vote

The Texas house of representatives approved a bill to cap the poll tax at $1, passing 106 to 26. The measure would prohibit any county or the state from levying taxes beyond the constitutional $1, with most counties already adding 25 to 50 cents. Supporters say the $1.75 tax kept citizens from voting while opponents resisted prohibiting higher levies. The plan could reduce state revenue by about $750,000 annually, offset by a larger school fund from additional voters.
