Too Fine Grinding of Feed Reduces Profits

Ralph G C Hay of the University of Illinois reports that grinding feed too fine raises power use and lowers net returns. He notes savings of up to eight cents per 100 pounds by coarse grinding when electricity costs six cents per kilowatt hour. Experiments show three to eight times more power for fine grinding, with hammer mills offering some advantages in fine grinding. Coarse grinding increases mill capacity and reduces wear, though some feeders fear more waste and dust reduces palatability. Feeding tests indicate cattle fed finely ground feed earn less net return than those fed coarser ground feed.
