Washington reports the federal government ran a deficit for the 1950 fiscal year. Outlays totaled $40 166 835 914 57 while receipts were $37 044 733 557 37 leaving a net shortfall of about $3 122 102 357 20. The treasury held $5 517 087 691 65 cash. debt stood at $257 376 855 385 01.
The federal report notes Americans saved over six billion dollars and suggests government could profit by citizen examples. Congressman Clark W. Thompson of Galveston campaigns for re election ahead of the July 22 Democratic primary in the Ninth District. Critics joke Texas could not support five state governments given current strains.
The scribe predicts Gov. Shivers will win 85 percent of votes in Lavaca County in the July 22 Democratic primary. Scoutmaster Lad Hruska and five Scouts departed Sunday for Camp Wooten in Austin. Everett Hruska Larry Maresh Jimmy Orts David Fisbeck and Calvin Haas joined the trip. Hruska returned Tuesday and the group will spend the week at the camp.
The average cost to trap deer for transplanting was $29.79 per head last year. On a South Texas ranch 885 white tailed deer cost $21,848.87 total or $25.56 per head. 135 turkeys cost $5,543.73 or $4.88 each. Aransas refuge trapping 271 deer cost $11,699.01 or $43.17 each. At the same place 183 raccoons cost $329.81 or $1.80 each.
Mrs Harold Knape returned to San Antonio Tuesday after spending several days with home folks in town.
The Kuehn family reunion was held at the W. F. W. Hall on Sunday, June 25, with a picnic dinner and supper. Officers for the coming year were elected, and a Kuehn Pilsner reunion planned for 1951. Many relatives from Cuero, El Campo, Houston, Hallettsville, New Braunfels, San Angelo, Flatonia, Shiner, and Moulton registered.
Fred Cadwell aged 70, prominent Flatonia resident, died after a long illness at Hallettsville Hospital. Services were conducted by Rev. F. Harrell and the Flatonia Masonic Lodge at Smith Funeral Home, with interment in City Cemetery. Survivors include brothers J. M. Cadwell of Flatonia and J. B. Cadwell of Houston.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schacherl of near Dickson school welcomed a son on Tuesday July 4. The mother is Faith Roznovsky, and the Roznovsky family, with Val Roznovsky now a grandparent, celebrate the new arrival.
Congressman Clark W. Thompson opens a tour of the Ninth District visiting counties and towns. He attends patriotic observances in Columbus Needville Wharton LaMarque Lake Jackson Fort Bend Matagorda Calhoun and Go i ad counties with plans to visit Waller Austin Lavaca Jackson Fayette and Brazoria next week.
In Yoakum a family Dr. A. J. and Mrs. House fear for their daughter Dorothy who had lived in Korea for two years with her husband Lt. Col. L. D. Vieman of the Korean advisory group. Dorothy was evacuated to Tokyo and the parents await further word as to Vieman’s whereabouts.
Continental Oil Co. brought in a flowing oiler Tuesday on a well seven miles northwest of Flatonia. Depth 2386 feet. The well produced 45 barrels daily from open hole on the Alfred Steinhau ser farm. A Red Bank Oil Co. well drilled 25 years ago was abandoned after water broke in.
The St. Anthony Parish picnic at Witting Park is set for Sunday July 9 starting 1:00 PM. A day of entertainment ends with a dance. supper at 5:00 PM features beef stew sausage and chicken. The Moulton Music Masters will perform day and night.
The first Flessner reunion was held at the American Legion Hall in Shiner on Sunday June 25 with visitors from sixteen towns. A bountiful dinner and supper were served as Leslie Flessner offered thanks. Registered guests came from Shiner Moulton Waelder Old Ocean Brazoria Sweeney Houston Gonzales New Braunfels Nordheim Cuero Yoakum Damon Freeport San Antonio and more, featuring many Flessner family members and spouses.
James B. Pyland of the United States Navy, who had been stationed in San Diego, visited his parents Supt. and Mrs. J. W. Pyland. He has been transferred to Memphis, Tennessee.
Mr and Mrs Adolph Syrinek of Flatonia announce the birth of a son Alben Ray at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital in Moulton on a Saturday June 24 at 6 15 PM weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces both proud parents confirm the happy arrival of their first child and only son
About 40 000 Lions from 600 Texas clubs plan a program to fund a 500000 Melvin Jones Camp for crippled children on a 504 acre site near Kerrville. President Jack Wiech of Brownsville announced the drive and outlines four membership types to support the project and its rehabilitation services.
U S Navy recruiter Roman E Hanak ENC will be in Moulton Texas on Friday July 7 1950 from 9 to 12 to discuss unlimited vacancies for men ages 17 to 31. Physical requirements have been lowered and enlistees may attend Navy trade schools for civilian use. Hanak will base at the post office. further information available at the Victoria Texas Recruiting Station or the Post Office Building in Victoria.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Knox and their children came back to Beasley on Wednesday after several days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Gibson. Miss LaVerne Gibson joined them to visit for a time.
The Moulton Chamber of Commerce defeated the Moulton Lions Club 13 to 1 in a four inning game played Thursday night. The Chamber scored 4 runs in the first, 3 in the second, 1 in the third and 5 in the fourth, while the Lions scored their lone run in the fourth.
E. J. Gerdes of Victoria awarded the contract to build a gymnasium and parish hall for S. S. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Shiner. Bid amount is $108,000 with 150 working days.
Wade B Whitsett age 103, one of Texas’s three Confederate veterans, became a colonel on Governor Allan Shivers staff in Bonham ceremonies. Gen Clayton P Kerr commander of the 49th Armored Division presented the commission.
