20000 Men Called for Draft Quota Set by Defense Dept
The Defense Department issued a 20 000 man draft call from Washington with 25 year olds called first and delivery within about 60 days. Major General Hershey said up to 300 000 could be provided in 90 days if needed. It is the first draft since 1949 and Texas quota is 1005 men.

Congressman Clark W. Thompson continued his Ninth District tour this week to cover all areas before a possible return to Washington. He cited his bill to extend government operation of the tin smelter for five years and said he would return to vote on the tidelands if needed. Mrs. J. H. Sockwell 68 died Saturday in LaCoste Texas and was laid in state at Smith Funeral Home in Moult. Rev C E Bottorff of San Antonio conducted the Monday 10 am service at Smith Funeral Chapel with interment in Moulton City Cemetery. She was born Ruby Cherry in Old Moulton August 27 1881 and married J. H. Sockwell November 17 1907. Survived by husband two sisters Mrs. Joe Lockwell and Miss Cherry and a number of nieces and nephews.

Social Security Tax Hike Won't Raise Benefit Payments
San Antonio Social Security official explains that a 50 percent tax increase from Jan 1 1950 does not automatically boost benefits. Congress must act to raise the benefit schedule. current beneficiaries would see automatic increases if lawmakers change the law. The tax rise funds reserves for future retirees with rates to rise again to 2 percent on Jan 1 1952.
