The editor urges communal effort to improve the area. Texas safety data show 1 965 traffic deaths in 1947 vs 1 959 in 1946. Also notes 1948 license plates go on sale next month with two plates per car and a deadline of April 1.
After a 25 year battle, tuberculosis deaths fell from 96 to 36 per 100 000 with children most aided by the drive behind Christmas Seals. Twenty five years ago 8892 children under 15 died. in 1945 the toll was 2119.
The Civil Service Commission announces examinations for filling vacancies as substitute clerk in the Moulton Post Office. Eligibility requires residence within the delivery area or being a bona fide patron. Entrance salary is $1.04 per hour. Applications available at the Post Office or from the Director, 14th U S Civil Service Region, 210 South Harwood, Dallas, Texas.
The Women's Missionary Society met Wednesday afternoon January 21 with 15 members. Mrs. George von Lienen presided as president. The group sang two hymns, shared scripture and prayer, and discussed the topic Sanctified through Thy Word within the Christian Citizenship theme. The Exodus Bible study was introduced focusing on The Oppression. Officers were appointed for the coming year including Deaconess Mrs. W. K. Rich ter and New Guinea Missions coordinators Mrs. J. M. Meiners and Mrs. Tom Beale. New books were to be selected by Mrs. Tom Beale and Mrs. Frank Biehunko Jr. The meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer and a social hour hosted by Mrs. John C. Mueller and Mrs. Walter Haas.
Eugenia Ermis was elected duchess to represent the Moulton Chapter at the Valentine Coronation sponsored by the Shiner Future Homemakers in Shiner on February 14. Jimmy Holub named Eugenia's escort. June Barnett has passed most Junior Degree tests. degree to be conferred later. Meeting adjourned.
The home of Paul Mayer of Dickson School community was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon January 22. The fire, according to reports, originated from an oil stove. Mr Mayer's loss is quite heavy.
The regular Geier- Merrem Post No. 392 American Legion meeting will be held at the legion Hall Tuesday night February 3 at 7 30 o clock. All members are urged to be present as it will be an important meeting.
The Texas Highway Department awards Holland Page Company of Austin the contract to build Farm-to-Market Highway 533 in Lavaca County. Bid stands at $28,138. The route runs about three miles from one mile northwest of Shiner on Highway 200 to the southwest with grading structures road-bed treatment and asphalt work included.
Novohrad 4 H Club held its regular meeting on a Wednesday at 10 30. Joe Rothe toured members homes to inspect projects and explained the Houston Fat Stock Show. Charlie Mig and Daniel Jasek will exhibit a fat steer and capons at the event.
Texas reported 3,253,360 bales of cotton ginned before January 1, 1947 from the new crop, up from 1,601,123 the prior season. National totals reached 11,373,407 bales, versus 8,027,449 bales on the same date last year.
Inclement weather forced a second postponement of the annual stockholders meeting for the Moulton Farmers Cooperative Gin & Mill Company. The meeting is now set for Monday February 9.

The Moulton High School Bobkatz coached by Marvin Merrem won the Prairie Lea invitation basketball tournament beating San Marcos 36 to 31 in the final. Earlier wins included Stockdale 83 to 29 and Dewey 39 to 24. Fisheck led scoring with 21 points, and I Kubenka Holub each had 11 in the final.
A deal was consummated making Jacop Tousek Jr the owner of the Leo Jaroszewski farm several miles southeast of Moulton. Possession will be taken on November 1, 1948.

Alma Kempe Chandler of Shiner dies January 25 at 56. funeral in Moulton with burial there. She leaves son Frankie, siblings Otto and Selma, mother Sophie, and ties to Moulton families.
Bobkats extended their season streak to 22 games with a 42 to 33 win over Waelder on the Wildcats court. Holub and M Kubenka each scored 10, Kolar 9, Fehrenkamp 8, F Kubenka 5, while Miksch led Waelder with 20.
George P. Barron was re elected superintendent of the Yoakum Public Schools at a recent school board meeting. He has led the Yoakum school system for sixteen years.
The Moulton Bobkatz travel to host the Shiner Comanches Friday for their fourth district game of the season. Local team aims to build district momentum with a road contest.
