New York April 1 The confession of Leonard Robinson a 14 year old boy who plotted to murder his playmate Jessie Danes leads to an appeal to the government to block enforcing the agreement. The boy is banished to a hut overlooking Shinnecock bay miles from home for three years where he clams and hunts ducks. No law supports such punishment but it is described as a concession by the girl's father and Moy's parents urge reform or asylum.
In Beaumont Texas Murray Henderson a negro was shot in the forehead by a white man. The bullet did not penetrate the brain and was removed by physicians. Henderson was seated on a sidewalk when the assailant fired a second shot before being restrained and jailed.
Lawrence Stultz aged 14 died after a quarrel at a Lincoln baseball game in which Louis Fairchild, also 14, struck him fracturing the temple. Stultz walked home but died during the night. Fairchild was arrested and charged with murder claiming self defense.
The Hague April 14 The peace plan would divide the country into districts with British district officers and a Boer committee elected by burghers. A British veto remains, British control of Johannesburg, and Dutch language proficiency required for most officers. A British lord commissioner would serve with a Boer executive resident at Pretoria.
In Brussels rioters and gendarmes clashed with cordons and sword charges. For the first time the police fired Mauser carbines loaded with strike cartridges. Several rioters died and many were wounded with hospital reports noting three dead and others mortally injured. A doctor lost an ear in the confusion amid the Rue Haute fighting.
A plan to unite Southern cotton yarn mills into a giant trust is being studied after F L Underwood of New York proposed a 60 million dollar stock issue. A five member committee reported favorably and a Charlotte meeting on April 23 will decide on acceptance.
A waterspout swept Glasscock county on Saturday evening drowning John F. Pike a Confederate veteran over 60 who was riding across a ravine near his home. A picnic party nearby narrowly escaped a similar fate as rain and hail fell in the county.
Reports from Alvin Texas dated April 14 indicate a hail storm on Saturday night caused extensive damage to berry and vegetable crops. Estimated losses reach $30,000 with some growers listing individual losses of $800 to $1,000.
In Dickinson Texas shipments of strawberries are up by one hundred percent from last year indicating strong local harvest gains and increased supply this season.
Dr. M Neu stadester of New York received a Vienna cablegram stating the Schnur family of ten jailed near the city for the murder of Schulim Schnur are released. The alleged victim, a Jewish youth from Dombrow Galicia, planned to convert and wed a Christian. parents sent him to relatives in the U S to avoid consequences. A twelve member committee chaired by the doctor raised funds and arranged his return to prove he was not murdered.
Major Littleton W. T. Waller of the Marine Corps has been acquitted by an eleven to two vote in a court martial. He admitted the charges of killing natives on Samar but argued he was justified. The trial centered on the alleged extrajudicial killings during the Samar campaign.
After a two years test of an automobile for army use in Austria there was a saving of $2,915 over the conveyance drawn by horses.
Mrs. Martha J. Calhoun aged 75 and her daughter Mrs. Vaughn aged 46 were shot to death by an unknown assailant. The younger woman is jailed in Ravenna pending investigation. Blood stains on the suspect's trousers. Vaughn shot six times, the mother slain in adjoining room. The killings followed the death of Vaughn's father who reportedly left most of his estate to the two women.
The Manila cholera situation remains steady while provincial conditions worsen. Manila reports 245 cases and 192 deaths, with 418 cases and 318 deaths in the provinces. The US transport Grant, bound for Samar, entered Legaspi with two cholera-stricken teamsters, was quarantined five days, and forced to return as supplies ran low. one teamster died and four Americans were attacked, with one death.
London reports that short Klerksdorp conferences suggest Boer leaders quickly agreed on a basis for negotiations with British leaders Lord Kitchener and Milner. Morning papers interpret this as readiness to make formal peace proposals. Boer headquarters at Brussels and The Hague say delegates will raise no opposition if terms are honorable and leaders accept maximum obtainable.
Kansas City April 14 report of a clash between officers and a noted outlaw Braggs J T. Four men are reported killed or wounded and seven wounded in the exchange. Details are expected by telegraph or phone tonight.
