Lisbon Homecoming Parade Highlights 1973 Queen and Winners

The Lisbon homecoming parade featured Gina Giannotti as queen with a court from Lisbon and nearby areas. Fifty parade units competed, with top floats from West Lisbon Lutheran Church and Lisbon groups, plus prize winners in commercial, mini float, and old car divisions. Attendance surpassed last year’s 1500 as skydivers and Soap Box Derby were canceled due to weather.

Tire theft at Morris Holiday Inn parking lot

The Morris Police received a report at 9 42 p m Sunday of a tire and rim stolen from a vehicle in the motel north lot valued at 80. Lou Berger of 733 Fremont Ave reported a missing blue and white AMF bicycle from his porch on Saturday or Sunday night. Richard Woodcock of 311 W Odell Gardner reported a missing tackle box valued at 300 from his boat near the garage.

Weather outlook and record heat at Dresden Island

Mostly cloudy and humid today with showers and storms. Highs in the mid 80s and a warm night with intermittent showers. Wednesday expected to stay cloudy with more showers or storms and highs near 80. This August saw a high of 96 on the 27th and a low of 50 on the 25th with 83 units of precipitation, the driest since 1948.

Man Falls From Courthouse Ledge in Grundy County

Rick Shannon 23 escaped serious injury after slipping from the second courthouse ledge while pulling a TV antenna wire. He struck a fence guard and a window, hung onto a wire cage, then fell to the ground. He was treated for minor back cuts and muscle and disc injuries.

Hurricane Delia Heads Toward Texas Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Delia nears the upper Gulf Coast and could strike between Port Arthur and High Island as forecasters warn of 5 to 7 pm landfall. Evacuations expanded along the Sabine Pass area, Bolivar Peninsula, and Brazosport beaches while 6 foot waves hit Galveston shores and Christine weakens offshore.

Illinois Gov. Walker grants state workers collective bargaining rights

Governor Daniel Walker issued an executive order granting state employees the right to organize and bargain collectively in Illinois. It allows joining unions without reprisals and the right not to participate in bargaining groups, but it preserves the current prohibition on strikes. The move labels Illinois as the fourth state to extend public employee bargaining, covering workers under the governor and those funded through the Department of Finance.

Narrow boating escapes near Morris during Labor Day weekend

Two boating mishaps near Morris over Labor Day weekend left four men safe after a motorboat struck a barge beneath the Illinois River Bridge at 12 15 a m. The crew swam ashore while on shore help aided another victim. A fifth person, Barbara Mauer, was treated at Morris Hospital for arm and hand cuts from propeller contact while another boat skidded out of sight.

Indiana State Prison ends a 35 hour uprising as three guards are released unharmed. Leader Orlester Beverly says protests over overcrowding and conditions triggered the revolt while Gov. Holiday Toll at 524 in Labor Day Weekend

The National Safety Council says 524 people died in traffic accidents nationwide over the three day Labor Day weekend. Earlier, estimates ranged from 550 to 650 fatalities for the period ending Monday midnight local time. The prior Labor Day toll was 580, the highest since World War II until 1968's 688. In the first six months of 1973, 26,500 people died in traffic accidents.
