Kissinger explains world alert over Middle East cease fire

The United States ordered a worldwide military alert amid ambiguity over Soviet plans to police a Middle East cease fire. Kissinger said no confrontation with the Soviet Union is intended and the US opposes large scale forces, offering observer support under UN supervision instead. Senator Jackson cited a brutal Soviet warning while Nixon stayed out of the NSC meeting.

Morris MCHS Board Accepts Low Bids for Life-Safety Projects

Morris Community High School Board of Education approved the lowest bids for life-safety construction under the Illinois act. Perkins Builders Co. wins general contract at 33141 and sidewalk work on Union Street at 11792. R. M. Stephen Construction Co. takes mechanical at 106000 with Ayers Electric Co. securing electrical at 103875. No bids for stage hangings food service or window shades.

EPA charges FPB with discharging wastewater into Morris sewer

The Environmental Protection Agency filed a complaint against Federal Paper Board on Sept 28 alleging discharges into Morris sewer and unnamed streams tributary to the Illinois River. The 10 page filing cites color odor solids and turbidity as pollution indicators and sets a hearing for Nov 19 at the First National Bank of Morris. The plant has been reusing materials since Oct 1 and reportedly not dumping into the river, while city officials note the sewer plant hadn’t used FPB for 23 days and problems have cleared.

Chrysler strike ends at Jefferson Avenue plant in Detroit

United Auto Workers members at Jefferson and at Fenton Missouri back the local contract demand by striking at 10 a.m. The Jefferson plant’s second shift workers were asked to return to work this afternoon while no talks were planned at Fenton. A Friday strike deadline looms for Belvidere Illinois with 6,100 workers. Seven of Chrysler’s 69 units lack agreements as strikes continue at other sites.

Morris Mayor Hendrickson in Poor Condition at St Joseph Hospital

Former Morris mayor John Hendrickson, 60, of 412 East Jackson Street, remains in poor condition in the cardiac ICU at St Joseph Hospital Joliet after being admitted Tuesday. Grundy County Board member Clarence Mosmann, 68, of 615 East Chapin Street, Morris, is in guarded condition at Morris Hospital after weekend admission for a respiratory illness.

Brisbin Road crossing hearing extended to January 15

A seventh continuance was granted for the Illinois Commerce Commission hearing to permanently close the Rock Island Brisbin Road crossing in Saratoga Township. Hearing Officer Harry Stern noted the Chicago hearing was postponed at the township attorney’s request to wait for U S 6 reopening and its impact on the case.

Arends Exits House Leadership Race Citing Unity

Rep. Leslie C. Arends of Illinois withdrew from the bid for House Republican leader as John J. Rhodes of Arizona nears election. The 78 year old whip said he aims to prevent a split in Republican ranks and praised Rhodes as a conservative in the Gerry Ford tradition with the attributes for an effective floor leader.

Morris City Considers 5 Percent Utility Tax Increase

Bridge Collapses on Hanson Road injures no one

A cement bridge about .2 miles east of Woods Road on Hanson Road gave way at noon Wednesday as Dan Meade of Gardner drove a tractor pulling a combine over it. The left wheels dropped over the side but the tractor stayed on top. Meade was uninjured. Officials reported the south side collapsed into the creek.

Five out-of-state men held after I-80 Mobil robbery

LaSalle County deputies captured five suspects from Michigan and Colorado about 30 minutes after the armed robbery of a Mobil Oil station at I-80 and Marseilles Road. The five, men ages 19 to 26, reportedly fled in a stolen 1973 Dodge van after taking 148 dollars with a knife. They were stopped west of I-80 near US 51 where deputies found a gun in the vehicle.

Morris Lions Halloween Parade Plans Announced

Morris Lions Club announces their annual Halloween parade at 5 30 p m next Monday with assembly at Washington and Liberty Streets. Prizes awarded for preschool and grades 1 through 3 4 through 5 6 through 8 adults and band plus a group costume award before marching to the Morris Theatre for cartoons treats and awards.
