Nixon Tapes Sealed for Secret Review by Judge Sirica

In Washington a court order confines access to President Nixon’s Watergate tapes to Judge John J. Sirica for secret review to decide if they can be turned over to a grand jury. If released they remain shielded from the Senate committee under secrecy rules. The appeals court allowed withholding materials tied to foreign policy or national defense with indexing for defense if challenged. In Illinois, Anthony Montoya, 24, of Ransom was killed in a head on collision on Illinois 18 near Streator. Daniel Schuler, 31, of Streator, was in critical condition.

Egyptian attack on Suez triggers urgent ceasefire watch

Israeli military command said Egypt launched a strong air and armored assault on the Suez front to break encirclement as U N truce observers moved toward battle lines to enforce a new Middle East cease fire. Tel Aviv claimed Cairo sought to halt Israeli advances west of the canal and protect eastern bank forces. Dayan said the cease fire was in effect and appeared to be working.

Former Joliet mayor Hendrickson in poor condition

John C. Hendrickson aged 60 formerly mayor of Joliet, was reported in poor condition this morning at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet. He was admitted at noon Tuesday and is in the cardiac section of the ICU.

Two Morris Men Ticketed After High Speed Chase

A high speed pursuit on Illinois 47 at 9 45 p m ended with Raymond Dite 46 and Phillip Collins Jr 27 being cited. Dite reported a hit and run by Collins who fled north on 47. Dite pursued to get the license plate while Diamond stopped Collins at the Collins farm entrance.

Body found south of Channahon in Will County

Will County sheriff's deputies investigate a death near McKinley Woods south of Channahon. The decomposed body, found by Marrill McMillan while fishing, remains unidentified and its cause undetermined. The AP notes this is the county’s fourth body found in a month, with linked cases in Oswego, Salem, and Oak Park and no arrests in three, while a Cook County arrest relates to the Schwegerman case.
