County supervisors circulate petitions for county board seats for next April's election. Filing windows may shift as the Illinois General Assembly considers new election dates. Names of districts and current petitioners are listed along with party affiliations and tentative terms.
President Nixon has selected two candidates to fill Supreme Court vacancies and will announce them in a live 7:30 p.m. EDT address. The Washington Post reports an ABA committee found both Mildred L. Lillie and Herschel Friday not qualified, casting doubt on the White House choices though Senate sources still predict Friday and Lillie as likely picks. The ABA vote followed Earlier views and coverage notes Nixon has not yet confirmed nominees, while Congress begins a four day recess and Judiciary Committee action could be delayed.
Memphis endured a second violent night with brick throwing gunfire and arson after an overnight curfew was announced then lifted by Mayor Henry Loeb. The unrest followed the death of Elton Hayes 17 listed as homicide after a police chase with conflicting reports of his cause of death. Police reported multiple injuries and numerous emergency calls as about 300 black residents met to demand suspensions be lifted and charges filed against 23 officers.
AP reports Pablo Neruda the Communist poet won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Neruda helped shape Chilean Marxist influence, served as Chilean ambassador to France, and wrote works like La United Fruit Company reflecting his politics. He began writing early and formed ties with Lorca during the Spanish Civil War.
Dr. James R. Schlesinger, head of the Atomic Energy Commission, told the Atomic Industrial Forum and the American Nuclear Society in Miami Beach that environmentalists will back nuclear power once its air pollution benefits are recognized. He called delaying tactics by some opponents costly and stressed the need for a safe reliable product and public confidence for growth.
The Grundy County Democratic committee men of Districts 1 and 2 will hold a state making meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the county courthouse. Announcement came from Democratic Chairman James McEvilly.

They demand a prison shake down 30 day lockup showers for one cell house a day denial of visits during lockup no policy changes then a committee to vote on future policy changes and accountability from Peter B Bensinger director of corrections.
A fire destroyed 35 acres of corn on A Russel Brown farm one mile west and south of Mazon. Neighbors pooled equipment and built an earth barrier to halt the blaze as firemen from Mazon Verona and Morris fought the flames for nearly two hours. The cause remained undetermined and nearby buildings were not threatened.
A park worker and a library clerk shared a 25000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of Karl Francis Werner. Werner, 19, San Jose State student, pleaded guilty to murder in the knife slayings of three teenage girls and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Gov. Ogilvie announced a special primary on February 15 to fill the seat formerly held by U S Rep Charlotte Reid now FCC member. April 4 is set for the general election aligning with county polls. The winner serves the remainder of Reid's term through January 1973 for Illinois 15th district including DeKalb Grundy Kane Kendall and LaSalle counties.
